Malaysia Airlines Herald Sun Tour of Provincial Victoria - 2.3Australia, October 14-24, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 9 - October 21: Nagambie - Mansfield, 151.8 kmTour lead swaps againBy Rod Morris In one of the most dramatic - and exciting - days on this year's Malaysia Airlines Herald Sun Tour of Provincial Victoria, the lead has swapped hands again, with Bicycle Superstore teammates David McKenzie and Karl Menzies providing a great double act. Menzies lost his 4-second lead over McKenzie when it was turned into an 11-second deficit, after a fall over the Strathbogie Ranges cost him valuable time. The 9th Stage of the tour, a 151.8 km race from Nagambie to Mansfield in Victoria's high country, produced a home town favourite on the winner's podium. Simon Gerrans, who hails from nearby Jamieson, proved a popular winner of the stage, saluting the crowd some 4 seconds ahead of Queenslander Ben Johnson. Gerrans, riding for the strong Jayco outfit and Johnson, riding for Malaysia Airlines, caught the main bunch napping at the 20 km mark and decided to hit. They quickly raced to a 30 second lead and with a good downhill run into Mansfield, were able to hold the chasers at bay. A long 700 m finishing straight proved a great backdrop for Gerrans to enjoy his victory. Johnson applauded Gerrans on his finish and then 5 seconds later sat up to watch the peloton led home by David McKenzie. Karl Menzies led the pack into the final straight but was swamped just before the line, finishing 10th "I'm dirty on the fall, it has cost me big time," Menzies said. "I hit a cat's eye in the middle of the road and the next thing I know, I'm on my backside on the road." Menzies received immediate - but make-shift - treatment from his team management, who provided a dirty rag and some gaffer tape to quell the blood loss from right knee and soon had Menzies on the road again. Within 10 minutes, Menzies fought his way back the tour convoy and resumed his position in the peloton. "There was no-one to blame, but I'm filthy on how it happened, it was a simple mistake," he said. Menzies was later treated by the Tour's medical staff, Dr Simon Hillman and Bob Hall, who inserted six stitches in his knee. "The Doc has patched me up and I'll be back tomorrow ready to give this tour a real shake," Menzies added. Menzies wasn't the only rider in the medical wars with Victorian Richard England (Mitchell Supplies) crashing badly on a "pick a plank" bridge, 91 km into the stage. England landed heavily on his face, was concussed and later transported to Melbourne's Austin Hospital requiring plastic surgery. Gerrans, who was one of the pre-race favourites, lost any real chance he had of victory when he missed a crucial break on Monday at Colac, but his Nagambie to Mansfield stage win, provides some compensation. "I can't win the tour, but I still wanted to win a stage and I probably couldn't have picked a better one than this because it is near my home town," Gerrans said. "When Ben and I hit out at the 20 km mark we weren't sure of what might happen. I thought the bunch would have chased a little harder, particularly over the last 5 km. Ben and I were both working as hard as we could to hold them out and I'm very happy with the end result." New tour leader, David McKenzie is yet to win a stage of the HST this week, but has been a model of consistency, finishing second to Baden Cooke in Geelong and third to Menzies on the opening day and again yesterday. McKenzie has won 11 stages of the HST in an illustrious career, but overall honours have always eluded him. "Winning the Herald Sun Tour has always been a dream of mine and perhaps I might never get a better chance than what lies in front of me right now," he said. "Our team has stated all week that we wanted the leader's top and apart from two stages, we've had it, but its still going to be tough to defend it over the next three days, anything can still happen in this bike race." Luke Roberts (La Trobe City) and Jonas Ljungblad (Europcar - Pelaco) are the two biggest dangers to the Bicycle Superstore teammates. Both Roberts and Ljungblad had good days on the road, picking up 15 and 17 seconds in time bonuses from the King of the Mountain and intermediate sprints. The HST continues tomorrow with dual stages, starting with a 33 km criterium in Mansfield and a 38 km sprint from Mansfield to Jamieson. A local sponsor has put up a special trophy for the best-performing rider throughout the three Mansfield based stages. The home town favourite Simon Gerrans is the early leader for the Madison Trifecta Champion with 10 points from yesterday's win. On Saturday the tour travels from Warragul to Mt Baw Baw, without doubt the toughest stage of the race and will climax in Traralgon this Sunday.
