Perras ends local dominance

The Australian dominance of winning stages in the Malaysian Airlines Herald Sun Tour of Provincial Victoria ended today when Canadian Dominique Perras won Stage 6 - a 178 km Colac Tour of the Otways. Perras, riding for the Active For Life team, was able to produce a blistering sprint to the line to beat Tasmanian Karl Menzies (Bicycle Superstore) and South Australian Olympic gold medallist Luke Roberts (La Trobe City).
The overall lead in the Herald Sun Tour swapped hands again with Menzies returning to the No. 1 role, which he held over the weekend. Overnight leader Dean Downing, a tough little Englishman riding for the Bendigo sponsored team, finished in the peloton, 21 seconds adrift of Menzies and his 20 second advantage over the Tasmanian is now a 36 second deficit and he has fallen to third.
Menzies' teammate David McKenzie remained in second - although leaprfogged - and is now 25 seconds behind the Apple Islander. "I couldn't be happier, not for one minute did I start this race expecting to ever wear the leader's top," Menzies said. "When I had it on Friday and Saturday I thought that was good enough, but to actually get it back is awesome.
"I haven't really thought about whether I can hold it all the way, but gee, we're starting to really get into this race now, so our team will have to start talking about it. We have riders in one and two, so its a good position to be in," he added.

Perras was the quiet man of a well-drilled breakaway group that started not long after the field left Colac. Fifteen riders soon started a break before a group of four - including Perras, Menzies, Phillip Thuaux (Jayco) and Irishman Brian Kenneally (Sungold Mile Warrnambool) - kicked further ahead. That quartet stayed together for a long time before Roberts and exciting Victorian Simon Gerrans (Jayco) bridged the gap. In fact Thuaux was under team instructions to drop back and help Gerrans be part of the main action. With Roberts and Gerrans now helping to form a solid group of six riders, the time gap widened to almost 3 minutes.
The breakaways shared the spoils in intermediate sprint and King of the Mountain time bonuses and it should be no surprise that at the end of the stage, five of them featured in the top 10 of General Classification honours. Kenneally was the first casualty of the breakaway group, dropping off near Glenaire. Thuaux, who had ridden so well on the hills called it a day with the break at around the 100 km mark and dropped back to come home with the peloton. From there it was left to the four leaders with time gaps closing with every km travelled.

At the 20 km mark, the margin had been reduced to a minute, 15 km later there were just 25 seconds separating the leaders and the chasing bunch. "As soon as word come through that the bunch were that close, everyone in the break stepped on the pedals a little harder," Menzies said.
Perras paid credit to his breakaway companions. "We had an amazingly strong group that worked very hard together; all of them have great qualities as road riders," he said. "I am glad Luke (Roberts) and Simon (Gerrans) were able to get across to us, because it made us a lot stronger."
The sprint finish at Colac was on a long straight and the enthusiastic crowd were treated to a grand finish with Perras claiming line honours by a bike length from Menzies and a further length to Roberts with Gerrans missing a top three placing. McKenzie led the bunch home with Baden Cooke (Subaru) right on his hammer. Dean Downing was at the tail of the main bunch.
The tour continues on Tuesday with another tough day in the saddle for the riders, a 154.8 km stretch from Creswick to Daylesford.
