Malaysia Airlines Herald Sun Tour of Provincial Victoria - 2.3Australia, October 14-24, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - October 16: Portarlington Circuit race, 117 kmGritty win by Olympian McLachlanBy Rod Morris in Portarlington If courage could be measured, Canberra cyclist Robert McLachlan must certainly have overdosed on the recipe. McLachlan scored a popular and gutsy win today in the fourth stage of the Malaysia Airlines Herald Sun Tour of Provincial Victoria. At Portarlington, 30 km outside of Victoria's second largest city, Geelong, McLachlan won the 117 km kermesse race on the same circuit once used for the Australian Open Road Championships. McLachlan - riding for the Argon 18 Bikes Caravello team - was part of a 12 man breakaway, who controlled the race for the bulk of the afternoon before the peloton decided to up the ante and try and reel them in. The peloton got most of them, but they didn't the Canberra gun, who won by 7 seconds from the previous day's dual stage winner Baden Cooke (Subaru), while HST debutant Richard England (Mitchell Supplies) snuck under the guard of the main stars to grab third spot. Englishman Dean Downing (Bendigo) slipped ahead of durable Tasmanian Karl Menzies to take the leader's yellow jersey. Downing finished fifth in the stage and his bonus of 12 seconds pushed him 5 seconds ahead of Menzies, while the Tasmanian's Bicycle Superstore teammate David McKenzie, remained third at 11 seconds behind the leader. Baden Cooke continued his charge up the General Classification leader board, claiming 18 seconds in bonus for his second placing in the stage and is fourth overall at 48 seconds. At age 33, McLachlan isn't exactly the youngest rider in the HST, but he is certainly one of the best. He represented Australia in the road race at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and then promptly gave the sport away for some time. Coming out of retirement two years ago, McLachlan has impressed the Australian cycling world with a growing list of race performances, capped with this victory. "I am really pleased with this result, I felt for sure we were going to be gobbled up by the bunch over the last lap," he said. The breakaway group had worked hard for about four laps to put time into the peloton and when the margin had stretched to almost 3 minutes, perhaps the ploy had worked. However the bunch lifted their rate, knew where to attack harder and when to play safe and at the bell lap, the gap had been slashed to 53 seconds. Even into the last 2 km, the gap was still 20 seconds and McLachlan and co. were fighting tooth and nail to hold on. McLachlan dug deep in the final 1000 metres and with a powerful sprint to the line was able to sit up and acknowledge the salutations of the big crowd at Portarlington. Seven seconds later there was mayhem as a large bunch sprinted hard for the remainder of the bonus points on offer. McKenzie finished seventh and picked up 8 seconds bonus, added to by 11 further seconds in intermediate sprints and 2 more seconds from the King of the Mountain, meaning he had a reasonable day in the saddle. Cooke, who won both stages on day two was not disappointed to miss a third consecutive win. "It was weird because at the bell lap I didn't think we going to catch the break and even at the end of the hill climb I thought we were too far back," Cooke said. "But we got over the climb and the break was in sight, I was cramping up but thought I've got to have a crack at this, I'm that close I can't waste the chance. "No way am I disappointed because Robbie (McLachlan) absolutely deserved his win." Tour officials presented the yellow jersey to overnight leader Karl Menzies, before double checking final results, which revealed Dean Downing as the new leader, that will be rectified before racing resumes in Stage 5, a 77 km kermesse on Geelong's Eastern Beach. On Monday, the HST heads to Colac and then North to Daylesford on Tuesday. The tour will finish next Sunday in Traralgon. Team Uno Clothing reportBy John Trevorrow Preston Forster, the owner of UNO clothing, decided to put together a professional team for the Sun Tour, and son Damian came out of a seven year retirement to get involved. Damian, now 31, retired at age 23 after winning the Grafton to Inverell in 1996 and a season racing professionally in Italy with Selle Italia. Cyclingnews asked Damian how his day had gone in Portarlington, riding in his first Herald Sun Tour in seven years. "The Portarlington circuit can be extremely tough if the wind is blowing and it can be brutal if it's blowing a gale," he said. "Fortunately for us there was little wind but that didn't deter the boys from having a dip." "Ten laps of an 11 kilometre circuit was on the menu and the speed was high right from the start. A breakaway escaped almost immediately and David Pell from Team Uno Clothing raced clear with two others but they were pulled back before the end of the first lap. There were a couple of more attempts before a very dangerous move of 11 guys got clear containing two of the race favourites, Dave McKenzie and Robert McLachlan. "I was surprised when their lead got out to over two minutes. George Vallins from Team Uno put in some strong turns on the front to get things happening and then the teammates of Luke Roberts and Baden Cooke really put the pressure on. The final two laps were very fast. I looked at my computer at one stage and we were doing 65 kph on the flat. We hit speeds in excess of 80 kph on the short descent. "In the closing kilometres, I thought we were going to catch the break and we nearly did, but McLachlan showed his true class and managed to stay clear. I was perfectly positioned on Baden Cooke's wheel as we approached the finish but in the jockeying for spots that always happens I had to make the choice between staying upright or holding the wheel. I went for the former and missed out on the glory. Seriously, I was happy with how I rode and the Uno Clothing team performed well as a group again. Today's course in Geelong is a great one for the spectators to see plenty of action. It is only just over 2 kilometres around so the riders will be in view for most of the race. I reckon a break might just stay away and I hope one of the UNO boys will be in the thick of it." PhotographyImages by Shane Goss/www.licoricegallery.com
