David McKenzie's dream of winning the Malaysian Airlines Herald Sun Tour took one step closer with a damage-free day in the Mansfield high country. Despite finishing sixth and fourth respectively in today's dual stages, McKenzie stretched his overall lead to 31 seconds, with only two - albeit one very tough section - remaining before the final finish line.
Today's star was Canberra school teacher Robert McLachlan, a former Australian Olympian, who has come out of a 10 year retirement to once again reach the pinnacle of his chosen sport. McLachlan was an impressive winner of the 10th stage, a 33 km criterium around the streets of Mansfield and then was even more noticeable in the short - but very quick - Mansfield to Jamieson afternoon stage.
He has become the only surviving three-time stage winner of this year's Herald Sun Tour after claiming victory in the Portarlington stage last Saturday. Baden Cooke also won three stages, but abandoned three days ago. "I felt really good out there today, it was fun and it was exciting," said McLachlan. "I'm not going to win the bike race overall, but winning stages is equally as important to some cyclists."

In the afternoon stage over two small climbs into Jamieson, McKenzie miscalculated the sprint home and could do no better than fourth behind McLachlan, Poland's Artur Krzeszowiec (Europcar - Pelaco) and flamboyant Englishman Jeremy Hunt (La Trobe City). But the minor placing did earn McKenzie 14 more seconds which stretched his overall lead out to 31 seconds over Menzies. In third place is Sweden's Jonas Ljungblad (Europcar - Pelaco) at 43 seconds and South Australia's Luke Roberts (La Trobe City) at 56 seconds.
The popular theory on the HST is that any of eight riders within 2'34 of each other can still win this tour. From fifth to eighth are Glen Mitchell (Active For Life), Ben Brooks (McGee - NSW IS), Keiran Page (Bendigo) and Dominique Perras (Active For Life). But facing the field is one of the toughest bike rides in the world, Warragul to the peak of Mt Baw Baw, some 1900 m above sea level.
Whilst riders shouldn't be too concerned over the first 75 km of Stage 12, the final 12 km climb is almost straight up and will sort out the race before the 81.6 km kermesse final stage in Traralgon on Sunday.
McLachlan is 30th in General Classification and whilst he won't win the overall honours on Sunday, has been one of the best performers in the 53rd running of the HST. "I'm stoked to have won one stage, let alone win three," he said. "I'm not usually that good in bunch sprints and I don't think Mt Baw Baw is going to be my go, but I'll give it my best shot and see what happens."

Whilst McLachlan is enjoying a double-victory day, the tour's other "Macca" - David McKenzie is looking more comfortable in yellow. "Our team has worked very hard to get into this position, we're running one and two and leading a couple of other categories as well," he said. "Obviously the race isn't over yet and we still have a fair bit of work to do. It's been a long held dream of mine to win this tour and I will never get a better chance of where I am at the moment, don't expect our team to give up this position all that easily over the next two stages."
Tomorrow's Warragul to Mt Baw Baw stage is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. and expected to finish at around 1.15 p.m. Sunday's Kermesse will start at 1.30 p.m. and finish at 3.30 p.m.
