Nature Valley Grand Prix - NEUSA, June 9-13, 2004Main Page Results Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - June 12: Red Wing road race, 80 milesKiesanowski overcomes confusion; McCook makes it a hat-trickJoanne Kiesanowski (Colavita Olive Oil) and Dave McCook (McGuire) were the victors in today's racing at the NVGP. Kiesanowski edged closer to race leader Lyne Bessette (Quark) but didn't quite manage to unseat the Canadian ace, while McCook once again demonstrated he is in storming form with his third straight victory. Women: Kiesanowski overcomes confusion; Race leaders hold courseOfficial report Joanne Kiesanowski (Colavita Olive Oil) won the women's fourth stage of nature valley Grand Prix after a rolling 80-mile stage that wasn't quite hilly enough to break up the leaders. Kiesanowski out-sprinted Lyne Bessette (Quark) after a final couple of kilometers marred by confusion about the race route. Andrea Hannos (Rona) was third. It was set up to be a tough finish for race leader Lyne Bessette. The rolling hills didn't take their toll on the Quark rider's challengers, but a misinformed cop did. Bessette went to the finish for second place in today's race and still holds the lead in the overall for the Nature Valley Grand Prix. "Yeah, it was hard to get away because the hills weren't really long enough," Bessette said. Red Wing's stage four was nevertheless challenging for some. Velo Bella's Brenn Wolford was in tears as she got dropped before mile 40. TDS-Schwalbe's Sarah Ulmer snapped her chain at the link, not the pin, up one of the climbs. Such was the course the Nature Valley Grand Prix organizers put together. They got a bonus with 86 degree heat. It's the first time the stage race has come to this border town between Minnesota and Wisconsin. By mile 54, riders had already climbed 2200 feet, and the average speed was 23.8 mph. Even at mile 60, there was no attack that lasted longer than 15 meters and no reports of T-Mobile's little climber Lynn Gaggioli going off the front."There were no hills," Gaggioli said, "not when it comes to a field sprint." Genesis Scuba/FFCC's Laura Van Gilder punctured and suffered through a slow wheel change. Bessette's other challengers used their teams to get at her, but Quark reeled them in patiently. "Everybody's attacking us, so if we start too early, then after 30 miles we're all toast," Bessette said. Joanne Kiesanowski was one of the attackers. Her Colavita Oil team was trying to get her the 21 seconds back she trailed Bessette for the leader's jersey. Knocking Bessette out of the top 3 in this fourth stage would've worked if Bessette had also gone the wrong way or failed to mark her rivals. "I came off Lynn Bessette's wheel at the end. I knew that I had to beat her to beat her in the overall GC, but I don't think I've done enough," Kiesanowski said. "A little miscommunication," TDS-Schwalbe's Shawn Heidgen said. "Some of the riders got directed right, and some of the riders went straight, so going full out on the last kilometer was a little confusion," Heidgen said. "We were all working for Anne Samplonius, and we had her up there with two miles to go, but just bad luck at the end," Heidgen said. Samplonius, and other GC contenders like Gaggioli, Rona's Katrina Grove, and others were in the front of the end group, but their wrong way turn cost them time bonuses. Team managers appealed to judges to let the finish stand, but eliminate time bonuses. Race officials declined their appeal, saying it's a professional cyclist's responsibility to know the course even if they're given bad directions. Kiesanowski took stage 4, followed by Bessette, and Rona's Andrea Hannos. Stage 5 is the final race around Stillwater, Minnesota. Men: Closer finish, same result: McCook winsBy James Lockwood In the Upper Midwest, Minnesota's hospitality is called Minnesota Nice. Dave McCook has been the happy recipient of plenty of Minnesota Nice this week. For the third day in a row, the McGuire Realty rider used his power far from the finish to win the inaugural 80-mile Red Wing Road Race, the fourth stage of the Nature Valley Grand Prix. This time, though, it took more work, as a break of three - including Sierra Nevada's third place GC contender Eric Wohlberg - challenged the peloton to catch them all the way to the finish. "I had to jump at 300 meters just to catch them," McCook said. "I barely caught him." Ofoto/Lombardi Sports' Eric Saunders, who finished third after making break of three with Wohlberg and Evan Elken of Ridge Mortgage Services, said the finish was so fast he didn't even see McCook fly past for the win. "I didn't even have time to think explicatives," he said. Monex's Emile Abraham took second, giving credit to his teammate Davide Frattini for the great pull. It was the second accolade given to the Monex rider for the sprint finish. "I dove for the wheel, and it was the perfect set up," McCook said as Frattini and Abraham moved in for the win. "The last kilometer, it was going to be close. If it wasn't for Monex, I don't know if I would have caught them." While giving no predictions, the day turned out the way McCook planned. Starting the race, McCook was wearing the blue sprinter's jersey he took Friday night from Navigator's Marty Nothstein, but he said before the race he had no desire to defend the jersey, finding more glory in the stage win. And while he got the stage win, he did lose the jersey, back to Nothstein. The Olympic track champion animated almost all the sprints up for grabs, taking a first, two seconds and a fourth in five of the sprints up for grabs. The strategy worked for getting the jersey, but was debatable about how smart it was for the team that had to defend the leader's jersey. "I think it helped and hurt," he said. "It took a lot out of the tank for me at the finish." Still, the team with only four guys at the event did what GC leader Henk Vogels questioned they could do: it controlled the peloton. "Realistically, we shouldn't have been able to control 130 guys," the Navigator leader said. "Burke (Swindlehurst) and Phil (Zajicek) were incredible today." Not that Vogels sat the whole day. The GC leader spent much of the day at the front, leading many of the chases himself as Ofoto animated break after break. "I had to. Everyone wanted to go for the jersey today." And that included Wohlberg, who fell just meters from a possible win and bonus time that could have launched him up the GC ladder. "He was definitely trying to make it," said breakaway compatriot Elken, who described his epic ride as the best breakaway in the biggest race he's ever been in. "That stuff happens," Wohlberg said. "You just have to try and see what happens. We're still in pretty good shape," he said. With less than a minute separating the top 16 riders, a lot of teams are sitting in good shape going into the final stage in Stillwater, a criterium that includes a 24-percent grade hill. Vogels said the key to winning not only the race but the grand prix will be taking control of Sunday's event. "If you don't try to go out and kill yourself for the first 30 minutes I think you should be able to contend for the race," he said.
