Stage 3: Thursday Jan 23, Glenelg - Hahndorf , 164km

Live report    Results & report    Previous stage    Next stage

11am – approx 2.47pm
Thursday 22 January

Covering the coasts and hinterlands of the Fleurieu Peninsula, Stage 3 incorporates some of the State’s most popular southern coastal areas and historic farming countryside. The Be Active Tour will commence in the morning with over 600 recreational riders tackling the route, before the professionals do. Starting in Cadell St, Goolwa, a pioneering port near the mouth of the Murray River, riders will warm up over a very short race neutral section, before passing across the Hindmarsh Island Bridge. This is the Tour’s first stint on the island, which is rich in aquatic bird life and an important cultural heritage site of the Ngarrindjeri Nation.

Back to Goolwa, riders head on to the surf havens of Middleton and Port Elliot for the SA Lotteries Sprint #1. The peloton proceeds along The Esplanade through Victor Harbor, a popular seaside resort and the largest town in the region, past the SA Whale Centre before the climb to the Laubman & Pank King of the Mountain at Newland Hill.

Stay in Victor Harbor for the South Australia’s Classic Veteran’s Race Series or follow the race until it returns to the town for the big finish.

Get a spot along Range Road to Parawa, generally regarded as one of the coldest spots in the state, then watch them descend the very steep road towards Yankalilla and its rich farmland and dairy pastures.

Nestled in the Bungala River Valley, the town boasts the Shrine to Our Lady of Yankalilla in the Anglican Church and the first schoolhouse to be used by Blessed Mary MacKillop. On Main South Rd, the peloton heads north through Myponga, taken from an Aboriginal word maippunga meaning ‘locality of high cliffs’. SA Lotteries Sprint #2 is adjacent to the General Store.

The race then encounters two Jacob’s Creek Tour Down Under firsts: the riders will travel over the top of the spillway of the Myponga Reservoir; and then need to steady their handlebars as they ride a section of dirt road on Myponga Beach and Fork Tree Roads.

The road to summer beachside town Carrickalinga will provide welcome sea breezes and views before riders head back to Victor Harbor for the finish on The Esplanade.

Stop by the Adelaide City Council Tour Village from 4-8pm or head to the King William Road Street Party at Unley from 6:30pm.
