6th Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under - 2.3Australia, January 20-25, 2004Home Live report Results Previous Stage Next stage Stage 3: Thursday Jan 22, Goolwa - Victor Harbor, 150 kmA new leader emerges: Jonker in yellowPhillipe Gilbert a surprise winnerBy Gabriella Ekström in Adelaide. After finishing in the top three yesterday, UniSA's Patrick Jonker used today's stage on the Fleurieu Peninsula to move up to the highest position in the general classification, being part of a successful 16 man breakaway that stayed away to the finish. The stage was won by young Belgian rider Philippe Gilbert (FDJeux.com), who used his relative anonymity to join an attack initiated by Gene Bates (UniSA) with four kilometres remaining, outsprinting the former U23 Australian champion to claim his first win of 2004. How it unfoldedAfter an aggressive start with many attempts to break away, an initial attack was launched by Aurélien Clerc (Quickstep), Murillo Fischer (Domina Vacanze) and Luke Roberts (UniSA). They were brought back before the peloton hit the scenic climb of Newland Hill at 35 kilometres, and first over the climb were Paolo Tiralongo (Panaria) and Massimiliano Gentili (Domina Vacanze). Behind them chased UniSA's Russell Van Hout, who was keen for the KOM points. On the descent, a break was formed as the riders regrouped after the climb, and when they left the turquoise ocean behind them, the nineteen riders ahead of the bunch were Jose Pecharroman, Kevin Hulsmans and Frederic Amorison (Quickstep), Antonio Fisher Murillo and Massimo Giunti (Domina Vacanze), David McKenzie and Ciaran Power (Navigators), Patrick Jonker (UniSA), Glenn D'Hollander (Lotto-Domo), Mark Jamieson (United Water), Alexandre Botcharov (Credit Agricole), Ben Day (Team Australia), Mikel Astarloza (Ag2r), Gene Bates and Luke Roberts (UniSA), Wim Vansevenant (Lotto-Domo), Robbie McEwen (Lotto-Domo), Philippe Gilbert and Bernhard Eisel (FDJeux.com). Over the following kilometres the group built up a lead of half a minute, but at the 55 kilometre mark, they could no longer fight the peloton off and the race came back together briefly. However some of the riders in the break were able to go along once again as a new break was formed. A group of sixteen took control over the race, and built up a lead of 1'27 as they passed over the second sprint of the day in Myponga, cheered by hundreds of participants from the Be Active Tour, who proudly coloured the roadsides with their orange jerseys in a Tour de France-esque style. Just like yesterday, both Robbie McEwen (Lotto-Domo) and Baden Cooke (FDJeux.com) paid attention to the movements at the front of the peloton and got in that break, and so did Pat Jonker. The other riders in the group were Alexandre Botcharov (Credit Agricole), Antonio Fisher Murillo, Massimo Giunti (Domina Vacanze), Kevin Hulsmans (Quickstep), Philippe Gilbert and Bernard Eisel (FDJeux.com), David McKenzie, Ciaran Power (Navigators), Ben Day (Team Australia), Giuliano Figueras (Panaria), Mark Jamieson (United Water), Gene Bates and Luke Roberts (UniSA). Race leader Dave McPartland of Team Australia found himself sitting in the second group at this point, and Quick.Step was driving that bus. However, they were safe with three riders in the break and didn't grit their teeth to catch the first group. When the front riders hit the 10 km section of dirt road at Myponga reservoir, they had a two minute advantage over the followers. The dusty piece of road soon took its toll on the riders, and one of the more remarkable punctures was experienced by Baden Cooke who was instantly given a new wheel by teammate Bernhard Eisel, and thereby was able to stay with the group. Coming round the Newland Hill in the opposite direction, the front group seemed certain that it would stay clear, and the tactics were taking over as the riders headed closer towards Victor Harbor. With four kilometres left to race, UniSA's Gene Bates got the order to attack and did so, bringing FDJeux.com rider and current U23 leader Philippe Gilbert with him. Gilbert explained after the stage that his main intention was to protect Baden Cooke's chances in the sprint, and that he therefor went after Bates. "After I had decided to follow Bates, I saw that Alexandre Botcharov was coming after us, so I changed my mind, and decided to have a go at the stage win myself instead." Gilbert said. Despite the effort put in by the riders behind them, Bates and Gilbert just stayed clear over the line, with the other riders from the breakaway close enough to finish within the same second as the winners. Young Gilbert took out the sprint, and was clearly thrilled after the finish. "I had two goals for this early season. To win a stage here and to ride well at Tour Méditerranéen, and now I've fulfilled one of my wishes!" Pat Jonker probably fulfilled one of his wishes too, when he stepped onto the podium to receive the yellow jersey and the cheers from the big crowds. "I knew that I would be in a good position if I could get into a break within the first hour. At one point, our group was almost caught, but Robbie (McEwen) and Baden (Cooke) really kept it going." "Tomorrow's going to be a hard stage, and you really have to use your head while tackling it. I can't just put my boys at the front and have them ride there all day. I'm pretty tired now, but if I find myself in the same position I'm in now after tomorrow's stage, I'd feel pretty confident." Robbie McEwen who finished third at the stage was rewarded with the sprint jersey, but it was of little consolation to a rider who had been hoping to get the stage victory. "It is a bit annoying to sit out there all day, riding for the win, just to see Gene Bates attack like that and handing over the win to Gilbert," said a disgruntled McEwen.
