6th Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under - 2.3Australia, January 20-25, 2004Home Live report Results Previous Stage Next stage Stage 2: Wednesday Jan 22, Jacob's Creek Visitor Centre - Kapunda, 157 km"Hungry dog" McPartland takes yellowBy Gabriella Ekström in Adelaide The first real road stage of Tour Down under was won by Team Australia's Dave McPartland, as he outsprinted Bankgiroloterij's Alain van Katwijk and UniSA's Pat Jonker after having been away with them for most of the day. McPartland, described by one of the spectators as 'one hungry dog', earned himself the lead in the sprint classification, and more importantly, the yellow leader's jersey. UniSA rider Pat Jonker told Cyclingnews before the stage that the team's main ambition was to win a stage, but he didn't mention then that his plan was to attack from the gun. Shortly after having done that, he was joined by Alain van Katwijk and Dave McPartland, the not expecting the break to last all the way. A helpful tailwind followed the riders as the left the city via George street on their way to the Adelaide hills, and Pat Jonker explained after the race that the wind was one of the reason the break lasted all the way. "My first main concern was to get ahead to the climb, but then the wind proved so favourable, and we worked so well together, so my initiative became successful." Over the beautiful rolling hills, the three riders built up an advantage of around five minutes before they came to face the wall-like Checker Hill at 27 kilometres. Behind them, the peloton, which had been rather reluctant up until this point, hit the short but steep climb at a speed that would soon ruin some riders' days. At the top, Alain van Katwijk took out the day's only KOM ahead of fellow breakaways McPartland and Jonker. Back in the peloton, Russell van Hout charged ahead of the rest to pick up some points in order to defend the jersey he had been awarded as the highest placed rider from last year's king of the mountain competition. After 28 kilometres of racing, the gap between the leaders and the peloton had grew to six minutes, despite the fact that the peloton was now riding people off the back. Back on the flat, the main bunch split up thanks to some aggressive riding, and as the breakaway reached a maximum gap of 9.17 at 70 km, two chase groups formed. The first chase group saw two possible stage winners in Baden Cooke and Robbie McEwen, strengthened by their teammates Thomas Lövkvist, Philippe Gilbert, Matt Wilson (FDJ) and Gert Steegmans and Hans de Clercq (Lotto-Domo). UniSa were also well represented by Luke Roberts, Gene Bates and Russell van Hout, and apart from them, another handful of riders joined forces. They were primary chased by a second group of a dozen riders, and after a regrouping thanks to new attacks from the peloton, one large chase group with 38 riders formed. Some of the new additions were Jaan Kirsipuu, Alexandre Botcharov, Laszlo Bodrogi, Kevin Hulsmans, David McKenzie, Guiliano Figueras, Ben Day and Hilton Clarke, with the big names like Cooke and McEwen still firmly placed in the chase. With fifty kilometres to the finish in Kapunda, the hard chasing peloton had brought the gap to the breakaways back to 4'40. In Greenock, the peloton headed back on a lap towards Nuriootpa that would take them through the beautiful and well known scenery of palmtree alleys, before heading back to the road towards the Barossa Valley town of Kapunda. The gap crept down to 2'30 as a determined Pat Jonker led his little break past the ten kilometre to go mark. Coming into the slightly uphill finish in Kapunda, Jonker was eager to finish off his career in great style, and started out the sprint with McPartland on his wheel. McPartland who admitted afterwards that he has been in great form for some weeks now, and out powered van Katwijk and Jonker close to the line. He was clearly excited with both his win and the jersey he will get to wear during tomorrow's stage. "I jumped straight into it when Pat attacked, even if I wasn't sure that the break would last, but we worked as a good team, the three of us," McPartland told Cyclingnews after the finish line. "I came into this race as an opportunist and I'd be really happy if I can hang on to this jersey for a couple of more days." Pat Jonker held his spirits high after the race, and was clearly happy for a young rider like McPartland to take the jersey. "Personally, I wasted a lot of energy today and I'll have to see how well I recover. I'm getting a bit old as you know. I might have hurt myself for the last time, but I can tell you that it hurt a lot! "I will keep focusing at a stage win, and also see how the other guys in the team goes and work from that." Jonker said after the stage where he was rewarded with the jersey of the most aggressive rider." The jersey for the best climber was awarded to a rider who didn't dare to describe himself as a climber. "No, I'm more of a sprinter really," Alain van Katwijk said being presented with the blue and orange jersey. "I will most likely not hold on to this jersey. Maybe if I can get up the road over a few more climbs I can keep it for a while, but it really just came with the attack. You take what you can!" The U23 competition saw a new leader in FDJeux.com's Philippe Gilbert who also had modest ambitions. "My job here is to work for Baden Cooke, and set him up for a stage win. This jersey is nice to wear of course, but it is really just an ‘extra' thing for me, and nothing that we can ride to defend."
