- Andrea Peron (Team CSC)
and Udo Bölts (Gerolsteiner) come into the finish in Liege together, much
wetter than when they started.
- Michael Boogerd's
(Rabobank) third place moves him to within 60 points of World Cup leader
Peter Van Petegem (Lotto-Domo).
- Laurent Brochard (AG2r
Prévoyance) is having a great season in 2003, but had a disappointing
ride in LBL.
- Andrea Noe (Alessio)
and Aitor Osa (iBanesto.com) come into Liege, both riders finishing in the
top 20.
- The two Davids
- Extebarria (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Rebellin (Gerolsteiner) finish seconds
apart.
- Amstel Gold winner
Alexandre Vinokourov (Team Telekom) was still feeling the effects of his
effort from the week before.
- Tyler Hamilton (Team
CSC) flies around the final corner, 12 seconds clear of his nearest rival
Iban Mayo (Euskaltel-Euskadi).
- With 300m to go,
Tyler Hamilton (Team CSC) was still riding like a man possessed.
- Iban Mayo (Euskaltel-Euskadi)
and Michael Boogerd (Rabobank) filled the other two spots on the LBL podium.
- Iban Mayo proved to
be the strongest of the chase group, finishing ahead of Michael Boogerd,
who added another World Cup podium finish to his palmares.
- Lance Armstrong (US
Postal) looked to have the race in hand when he attacked with 16 km to
go, but didn't count of the tactical nous of his former teammate.
- Michele Bartoli (Fassa
Bortolo) was one of a group of four who caught the lone figure of Axel
Merckx (Lotto-Domo) with 25km to go.
- A Gerolsteiner rider's
face shows the pain of 258 kilometres of racing.
- Tyler Hamilton (Team
CSC) becomes the first American in cycling history to take out La Doyenne.
- Matthias Kessler (Team
Telekom) solid form continued in LBL, placing in the top 20.
- Axel Merckx (Lotto-Domo)
attacked on his own with 25 kilometres to go, but he was caught by an important
group containing Lance Armstrong.
- Axel Merckx (Lotto-Domo)
used all his remaining energy in his solo escape.
- Team CSC DS Bjarne Riis
liked what he saw today.
- Bjarne Riis almost
looks as stunned as Hamilton after a surprise win by the (other) American.
- Jan Ullrich's (Team Coast)
form is back on track, and rode sensibly throughout the race.
- Christophe Moreau
(Crédit Agricole), Manuel Beltran and Jan Ullrich (Team Coast) all finished
in the top 30 riders.
- Christophe Moreau
(Crédit Agricole) gives it everything to pipp Coast teammates Beltran
and Ullrich to the line.
- At least until the HEW Cyclassics
on August 3, Peter Van Petegem remains the World Cup leader, 60 points clear
of Michael Boogerd (Rabobank).
