2nd GP Feminas Castilla y Leon - CDMSpain, March 30, 2003Main Page Results World Cup Standings Melchers wins with last minute attackCarrigan maintains World Cup leadDutchwoman Mirjam Melchers has claimed her first World Cup race win of the season, taking the GP Feminas Castilla y Leon in Villarcayo, Spain. Melchers attacked a 20 rider lead group with eight kilometres to go to win the race by two seconds, with Anita Valen (Bik-Powerplate) taking the bunch sprint for second ahead of teammate Sara Carrigan. The latter increased her lead in the World Cup competition with 118 points, ahead of Melchers (85 pts) and Schleicher (82 pts). The race was held over seven laps of a testing course in Villarcayo. Nothing happened during the first five laps with the peloton content to remain together. With two laps to go, Nicole Brändli (Prato Marathon Bike) and Olivia Gollan (Australian National Team) attacked, gaining up to 40 seconds lead on the bunch. That provoked a reaction, and the race became very aggressive with a group of 26 riders forming at the front, containing most of the favourites for the race. Melchers was able to attack the group in the last lap to take the win, her biggest of the season. She will try and claim the World Cup jersey on her home territory when the fourth round, the Amstel Gold Race, takes place in the Netherlands on April 20. PhotosImages by AFP
