90th Tour de France - July 5-27, 2003Main Page Live report Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 9 - Monday July 14: Bourg d'Oisans - Gap, 184.5 kmVino wins big battle on Bastille Day
Beloki crashes out; Armstrong goes cross-countryBy Tim Maloney, European Editor in Gap The French say philosophically "C'est Le Tour", meaning anything can happen in the Tour de France and today, a slip of a wheel on a patch of melting tar on the descent of the supposedly routine Cat. 3 Cote de la Rochette turned the situation at the Centenary Tour upside down. At the start of Monday morning's Bastille Day stage in Bourg d'Oisans, defending champion Lance Armstrong (USPS-Berry Floor) was resplendent in his new Maillot Jaune, while his main Tour rival Joseba Beloki was looking more like an adversary than ever before after attacking the American yesterday. Five hours later in Gap, after an exhausting brutal stage in 35 degree heat won by Alexandre Vinokourov, Beloki was out of the 2003 Tour de France from a heavy crash with 6 km to go. In a moment that will live in sports highlight films for many years to come, Maillot Jaune Armstrong showed incredible sang froid to avoid the prostrate Beloki by riding across a recently harvested field, jumping off his bike and finishing the stage with the leaders. Armstrong told Cyclingnews after the tumultuous stage, "Beloki came into that corner too fast and he realized it, hit the brakes too hard and locked up the back wheel. His wheel started to slide out of control, he rolled his tire and it blew... I couldn't go right because the corner was too sharp, I couldn't go straight because I would hit Beloki, so I had to go left into the field," laughed the relieved Armstrong. "It happened so fast, I thought Beloki would get a bike change and it he would come back immediately... his crash didn't look that bad." As Beloki descended in the lead of the Cat 3 côte after attacker Alex Vinokourov (Telekom), ONCE team manager Manolo Saiz told him in his earpiece to let Armstrong lead the chase, not him. But it was too late. Beloki went down hard and as the ONCE rider lay on the ground screaming in pain, Saiz could see his injuries were serious. Brave Beloki told Saiz he could go on but Manolo told him 'tranquillo', as he realized his rider's Tour de France was over. Likely out for the season, Beloki will be operated on in Gap tonight for his broken elbow, then be flown to Vitoria, near his home in Spain where his wife Rema is expecting a baby in a few weeks, for two further operations on his broken femur and finger. But Lance Armstrong wasn't gloating over what happened to the ONCE rider. "I feel very sorry for him," said the Maillot Jaune. "You don't want to lose one of your main competitors due to a crash. I send out my condolences to Joseba. He was riding the race, he was the only guy on the front, it was he and I doing the race to bring back [eventual stage winner] Vinokourov. Armstrong said, "The first thing I thought when Beloki crashed was 'I can't lose any time here; just stay with the group'. At first, I thought I would have to turn around and come back out of the field, but then when I looked up, I realized maybe I can go through the field, it'll come back around." When we asked Armstrong how his mountain bike and cyclocross exploits helped his incredible riding today, Armstrong said, "the field wasn't as rooty as Mount Snow, but I carried the bike the same way. There was a big drop-off so I had no choice [but to use a 'cross dismount]." The relieved Tour champ continued, "I was lucky that the field was there like that. Normally it could be full of crops, and I was lucky that there was even a little road there. I ended up in the field and said 'shit, I'm committed halfway, I've got to keep going.'" A character win for VinokourovWhile all this drama was unfolding behind him, Kazakh Alexandre Vinokourov was on his way to winning the ninth stage, having attacked on the final climb of the Côte de La Rochette with 9 km to go. Vino blew by Ivan Parra (Kelme-Costa Blanca) and Jorg Jaksche (ONCE-Eroski), the remnants of a 14-man breakaway that had attacked near the beginning of the stage. Jaksche and co. had gained up to 6'30 at one stage, which put the German ONCE rider in the virtual yellow jersey. However US Postal's blue train worked hard to bring down the gap to a manageable level by the final climb. When the crash happened, Vinokourov was leading by around 15 seconds, with Armstrong and Beloki heading the chasing group. But the crash took the wind out of the chase, and they group ultimately finished 36 seconds behind the Kazakh. "This morning, I didn't consider the stage win at all," Vinokourov told Cyclingnews reporter Gabriella Ekström after the stage. "Just before the stage, I had a discussion with [Telekom DS] Mario Kummer, and we agreed that if I felt good towards the end, I could try an attack in the last fifteen kilometres, and see if I could gain some time on Armstrong." Gain time he did, and the gutsy Telekom rider picked up a 20-second time bonus to move within 21 seconds of Armstrong's yellow jersey, which is by no means safe yet. Vinokourov's second place yesterday and his win today were inspiring rides, and once again he admitted that he was riding on the strength of his countryman and friend Andrei Kivilev, who died after a crash in Paris-Nice in March. "Since Andrei Kivilev died, I have been riding with the strength of two men. Andrei is lending me his strength and force, and he is with me everyday and pushes me." How the rest faredAmerican Tyler Hamilton hung tough yet another day on Bastille Day. Battling two major mountain climbs, heavy, hard roads and a headwind, the exhausted, man from Marblehead was so dehydrated that he had to stay in medical control for almost an hour after the stage. "It was hard, very hard; there was a lot of accelerating on the climbs and it was a hard finish today," said Hamilton. Tenth on the stage and still a contender at fifth on GC, the gutsy New Englander continues to amaze with his compromised Tour de France performance. Before Stage 9, Jan Ullrich (Bianchi) said, "It's difficult to make a judgment about Armstrong's form now, but no doubt that he has the strongest team. What [USPS] has done so far is phenomenal." Today Ullrich didn't like the intense heat, but he sprinted in with the leaders for fifth place on the stage and is now well positioned to challenge for the podium at this year's Tour, only 2'10" behind Armstrong. Scot David Millar (Cofidis) made an audacious attack with 31 km to go, but his move was too soon. Millar might have arrived with the best today, but ended up in the third group, losing almost a minute to Maillot Jaune Armstrong. "I thought the course went up that climb, descended and went up the next climb," explained Millar. "I didn't realize I had so much flat and headwind... a bit of a tactical error. I was really trying hard and I was enjoying it. Mistakes, you've got to learn from them..." Italian Ivan Basso (Fassa Bortolo) rode well at this year's Tour to move up to seventh on GC, while his countrymen Gilberto Simoni (Saeco) and Stefano Garzelli continued their struggles. Basso told Cyclingnews in Gap that "It was a really hard, hard, hard, hard stage today. On the final climb, I wasn't trying to attack, just stay with the best riders. But I hope that the right moment comes along soon to go for a stage win. Beloki was leading the descent and he hit some melting tar and slipped. The descent was really slippery; it seemed like we were riding on ice!" Giro d'Italia winner Gilberto Simoni (Saeco) has not given up hope of some success at the Centenary Tour. "Wednesday is the rest day, so let's see how things go. As far as what Armstrong said yesterday, I don't think I underestimated the Tour. There was just something that didn't work in my preparation." Simoni's Giro runner-up Stefano Garzelli (Vini Caldirola-So.Di) had a tough day on the way to Gap. "I'm suffering from a sore throat again and I thought about abandoning today, but let's see how things go tomorrow," he said. Despite the absence of last year's Tour de France runner-up Beloki, with the first six riders behind Lance Armstrong within 2'25", including his old adversary Jan Ullrich and ambitious Basque Iban Mayo (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and dangerous Stage 9 winner Alex Vinokourov (Telekom), Armstrong's 2003 Tour de France is still no cakewalk. With a rest day Wednesday, Armstrong hopes to put some further time into his key rivals on Friday's key time trial. Stage 10 - Tuesday, July 15: Gap-Marseille, 219.5kmFounded over two and a half millennia ago by wayfaring Greeks, Marseilles was one of the original stops for the 1903 Tour. Marseilles is famous for its ports, gangsters and soap. This stage is mostly downhill through the scrubby back country of Provence along the Durance River Valley. Stage 10 could favour a break that goes early... if the sprinters' teams let it ride to the finish in the picturesque Old Port. PhotographyImages by Jonathan Devich/Cyclingnews.com, epicimages.us
