Vic Roads Herald Sun Tour 2003 - 2.3Australia, October 16-26, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 7 - October 21: Port Fairy To Hamilton, 98.7 kmsBritish on a rollBy Rod Morris in Hamilton The Union Jack flew high and proudly in today's dual stages of the $120,000 VicRoads Herald Sun Tour road cycling classic. The 52nd Herald Sun Tour saw two tour debutants win career high races in a day of high drama. Isle of Wight youngster Keiran Page upstaged all the big guns in Stage 6, a 30 km kermesse in the sleepy Victorian hamlet. The luck of the British continued in the afternoon when 23-year-old Kristian House, riding for Emu Spirit/Apsco collared Canberra rider Robert McLachlan (Caravello) on the line in the finish of the Port Fairy to Hamilton Stage 7 of 98.7 km. And just to rub salt into the wounds of the bleeding Australians, another Englishman, Stephen Cummings (Bendigo Building Industry) claimed third, to complete a great day on the podium for the British track squad. Warrnambool rider Jamie Drew (Jayco) strengthened his hold on the tour leader's jersey, extending his margin from 36 seconds to 42 seconds over Kjell Carlstrom (Europcar - Pelaco), while Victorian youngster Simon Gerrans (Malaysia Airlines) stayed in third, but is now 47 seconds adrift. The big mover of the day was Englishman Kristian House (Emu Spirit/Apsco) improving from 11th to 6th after winning the afternoon stage. The wind played havoc with the field - which has now been reduced to 79 riders, following the retirements today of Glen Stojanow (Caravello), Graham Rootes (Rio Coffee) and Ashley Hutchinson (Carlton Midstrength) - and there was simply nowhere to hide.
How it unfoldedRiders were offered only a 75 minute break for lunch before setting off for Port Fairy. Less than 5 km into the stage, the peloton broke into three distinctive groups, although the margins were never any more than 20 seconds. At around 40 km, the second and third groups came back together, but they were pressured by the leaders to close down the gap. Eventually they did reel in the lead group, only to be hit again by a small bunch, who hit hard and bravely in the conditions. The group of nine riders included six of the top 10 in General Classification, plus the leader of the Sprint jersey (Kjell Carlstrom) and King of the Mountain top (Ivan Fanelli). With all of the "Big Guns" in the breakaway group, there was so much action, it was hard to keep tabs on it all. As the race reached the closing 20 km, the nine leaders were again reeled in, only to see another attack come from the bunch. This time it was Hilton Clarke (Barloworld), Matt Wilson (Jayco), Phillip Thuaux (Ballarat*eureka!) and Robert McLachlan (Caravello) among others to set the pace. But yet again the peloton threw out the hook and reeled in a big catch. Into a long 400 m home straight at Hamilton for the sprinters to get the right line and McLachlan, a 1992 Australian Olympian at Barcelona, must've surely though he had it right on the inside and out of the wind. But in a desperate finish, House caught McLachlan just metres before the line. Five seconds later, Stephen Cummings (Bendigo Building Industry) crossed the tape in third position. "Man that was an incredible race, group after group were chasing down the road," House said. "This is my first trip to Australia and I was probably a bit apprehensive early in the tour, but I'm getting stronger each day." To justify House's comments are his improvement in general classification. He started the day in 11th position at 1.22 minute behind the leader Jamie Drew (Jayco), but has leapt into sixth and chopped 21 seconds off his deficit. Whilst disappointed to run second, McLachlan heaped praise on everyone associated with the Herald Sun Tour. "This tour is so well run, it has a great atmosphere and there is a lot of fun in the bunch when out on the road," he said. "I wanted to go for the win today, but it wasn't to be.......hopefully there will be other stages for me." The Tour continues tomorrow with its longest stage, a tough 162.7 km journey from Dunkeld to Horsham in Victoria's Western Region. The stage will start at 10.30 a.m. and is expected to finish at 2.30 p.m. Along the way however, riders will be subjected to 8 intermediate sprints and 3 hill climbs.
