Vic Roads Herald Sun Tour 2003 - 2.3Australia, October 16-26, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 11 - October 24: St. Arnaud To Castlemaine, 146.4 kmsRoberts within sight of victoryBy Rod Morris in Castlemaine Barring accident, injury or a sudden drop in form, South Australian Luke Roberts should win the $120,000 VicRoads Herald Sun Tour, which will finish in Ballarat on Sunday (October 26). Roberts (26), a member of the reigning world champion pursuit team which established a new record time at this year's World titles in Germany, is equally talented on his road bike and he will carry a 33-second lead into the final two stages, a 34 km criterium in the NSW - Victorian border towns Echuca - Moama on Saturday and then a tough 81.6 km stage in Buninyong - near Ballarat - on the same course as the Australian Open Championships. Roberts, riding for the Emu Spirit/Apsco team survived today's 11th stage from St Arnaud to Castlemaine, which was won in sensational style by American Scott Moninger, finishing fifth over the line. Moninger (36), riding for the Ballarat*eureka! team, made his winning move after the lead bunch hit the peak of Mt Alexander, a Category 2 climb just 20 km from the stage finish. Moninger was clocked at 90 km/h on the Mt Alexander descent and over the closing distance opened up a gap of almost a minute on the chasing group, which included most of the main dangers in General Classification honours. "Because I'm so far down on GC, they (the bunch) didn't see me as a threat, so I was able to get away pretty easily," Moninger said. The American, who is just back from a disputed drug related suspension in his home country, started the stage in 13th position and more than 4 minutes behind tour leader Roberts. His stage win elevated him one position on GC and is now under the 4 minute margin, but still too far back to worry the leaders. Moninger has a great record in the Herald Sun Tour, finishing 5th in his maiden tour in 1993, he won in 1996, was 15th in 1998 and was second to Eugen Wacker (Krygyzstan) in 2000. "I look like finishing top 15 again this year, so I am pretty proud of my record in this race," Moninger said. "I have been wanting to win a stage all week and I was running out of chances, so I'm glad everything went my way today." Although Moninger had opened up a sizeable gap on the Mt Alexander descent, the margin was reeled back to just 5 seconds on the finish line with previous tour leader Jamie Drew (Jayco) claiming second just ahead of Malaysia Airlines rider Matt Wilson. How it unfoldedThe 146 km from St Arnuad to Castlemaine in Victoria's North, was raced in picture-perfect conditions...not a breath of wind and the sun beaming overhead. For some riders, it appeared as though Stage 11 was going to be a "Picnic Day" while for others - the ones at the front of the race - it was nothing short of hectic. Most of the GC challengers were content to watch their opponents, whilst there were many riders wanting to cash-in on the remaining stage spoils. Belgium rider Bart Heirewegh (Carlton Midstrength), a winner of six previous Herald Sun Tour stages was certainly one of the more aggressive cyclists early in the stage and was rewarded later in the day with a cash incentive from the Tour Director, John Craven. At one stage there was a solid group of 20 riders out in front and maintaining a tempo that had the peloton re-thinking its tactics. But as it always seems to do in so many road races around the world, the peloton was able to reel the leaders back in, timing its run to near-perfection. Roberts, the reigning champion of the Tour of Tasmania - last held in 2002 - said he was now reasonably confident of holding onto the prized yellow jersey right till the finish. "I feel fresh and know Sunday's course at Buninyong pretty well, so unless something strange happens now, I should win this race," Roberts said. "I watched Simon Gerrans closely today, but then Tim Johnson, who is also well up on GC made a few strong moves and my team had to work overtime to keep him in check." Roberts intends to play safe in the Echuca Criterium and will then attack - if necessary - on Sunday. "The bike race is still well and truly up for grabs, 33 seconds hasn't got me home and hosed yet," he added. With Gerrans, Roberts' immediate danger, the tour leader will also have to watch Kjell Carlstrom (Europcar - Pelaco), at 1 minute, Matt Wilson (Malaysia Airlines), 1.14; Tim Johnson (Active For Life), 1.24 and Tasmanian Sean Sullivan (Barloworld), who is 1.30 behind. Many of the riders will be looking forward to the finish in Buninyong, but will not have much respite before the $60,000 Jayco Tour of Queensland starts in Bundaberg on November 3.
