Vic Roads Herald Sun Tour 2003 - 2.3Australia, October 16-26, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 10 - October 23: Hall’s Gap To Ararat, 52.5 kms'Trackie' Roberts proves road star qualityFrom Rod Morris in Ararat Luke Roberts' aim to be considered a bit more than a "good all-rounder" received a gigantic boost today when he took over as outright leader of the $120,000 VicRoads Herald Sun Tour. Roberts (26) is already one of the most decorated track riders this country has ever produced, having been part of the national team which won this year's world pursuit in a stunning 3.57 minutes at the World Track Titles in Germany. "Whenever I ride on the road, people are forever asking me, "Are you the same Luke Roberts who rides track?" he said. Road or track it doesn't matter, Luke Roberts is a star performer. Roberts didn't win either of today's stages, but his effort of finishing fourth in the climb from Horsham to Mt William and then courageous fifth in the afternoon stage from Hall's Gap to Ararat, pushed him into the prized yellow jersey. The big loser of the day was Jamie Drew, who fell from outright lead to 11th and almost seemingly out of contention at more than a minute behind. In the afternoon stage Drew leapt back into eighth position but in the same breath slipped to 2.08 minutes behind Roberts. There was no shortage of international flavour as American Tim Johnson won the morning stage and then in the afternoon, his Active For Life Canadian teammate Dominque Perras claimed line honours in the afternoon sprint. Tour Director John Craven was labelled a "sadist" by riders yesterday after they completed a tough Category 1 climb up Mt William, were allowed 90 minutes for lunch and then sent on their way again. "Well, they are racing for $120,000," Craven smiled. How it unfoldedA little jaunt of 52 km from Hall's Gap to Ararat in Victoria's Western region doesn't sound that danuting, but when you have a field of 76 international cyclists chasing big dollars and important UCI ranking points, the little jaunt takes on a new meaning. The pressure was on from the start and by 20 km in, four riders were attempting a bold break. Former Australian Olympian Robert McLachlan (Caravello), Englishman Chris Newtown (Bendigo Building Industry), Czechoslovakian Lubor Tesar (Team Warrnambool) and Canadian Dominique Perras (Active For Life) weren't worrying the leaders on GC and were allowed some leeway out in front. And for once the peloton got it wrong with three of that four - Perras, Tesar and Newtown - filling the podium positions. Their task was made slightly easier when 11 riders crashed at the 1 km, which was at the foot of the final climb to the finish line. The crash included GC challengers, Jeremy Hunt (Malaysia Airlines) and Kjell Carlstrom (Europcar - Pelaco), as well as Brett Aitken (Rio Coffee), who was looking to win the Australian Based Rider Championship. Their absence for the sprint to the line made it slightly easier for Luke Roberts and Simon Gerrans (Malaysia Airlines), who are now running one and two respectively in overall honours. "At the start of the week, I never intended to challenge for the GC, but now I'm in this position, I have to go for it," Roberts said. "Everything has gone to plan for our team over the last few days and with a stage win from Kristian House and now the outright lead, there is renewed enthusiasm within the team." The stage winner, Dominique Perras, said the result made up for losing Stage 8. "I was pretty angry when I lost the stage going into Horsham, so this certainly makes up for it," Perras said. This is Perras' second visit to Australia after racing in last year's Bay Crit series and National Open titles. "I love the style of racing in Australia and the atmosphere of this tour is great," he added. PhotographyImages by Shane Goss/Cyclingnews.com/www.licoricegallery.com
