Yates set for glory

With just one day remaining in the PowerNet Tour of Southland, race leader Jeremy Yates still has his luxurious lead of fifty seconds intact.
The 180km Stage from Winton to Te Anau in the South Island's Lake district was predicted to be where the showdown between Yates and the powerful Southland Times team would eventually happen, giving Scott Guyton the chance to wear the yellow Jersey into Invercargill tomorrow.
The challenge came on the final hill climb 30km from the finish but the move backfired and the group of five riders that went clear on the climb included Yates and his support man, New Zealand road Champion Heath Blackgrove, while Guyton also in the group had no support.

The five stayed together until the finish where Guyton took the win by a bike length from Yates. Yates had planned to give the win to Phillip Schnyder who had worked hard to establish the break. "I said to Scott with about 10km to go that Schnyder should win as a token of good faith for working so hard but he wasn't keen on that. I think that Phillip moved up a few places at the expense of the Southland Times boys," Yates said.
Julian Dean, a major force behind the success of the Zookeepers team withdrew from the race today. With no racing for six weeks before the Tour he found the going too hard. "It's not the kind of race you can cruise through," he said.
John Alabaster, the 48 year old hero of yesterdays stages was again in an early break today but the effort told and he finished just inside the time cut off. Along with two previous Tour winners, Brian Fowler and Jack Swart he was given UCI dispensation to ride the Tour.
The Tour finishes at Invercargill tomorrow.
