Le Tour du Grand Montréal - 2.9.1Canada, June 2-4, 2003Prologue - June 2: Arrondissement Lachine ITT, 3 kmJeanson Pleases Home Crowd AgainBy Kristy Scrymgeour in Montreal Only two days after her brilliant win in the Montreal World Cup, Jeanson came back to take the first stage of the Tour du Grand Montreal today, only a few kilometers from her home. The Jeanson fans flocked to the scene again to watch the women ride the three kilometer Time Trial set on narrow bike paths that run through a recreational park and the young Quebecois did not disappoint. On a beautiful sunny Montreal day, the course handed the riders a strong headwind as they took off along the canal. After a few hundred meters, they hit a sharp left and a sweeping right-hand loop before heading back to the finish line with a headwind. Katie Mactier set a high standard early in the event when she used her newly learned pursuiting skills to clock a time of 3.56.03. Amber Neben (T-Mobile), Manon Jutras (Saturn) and Diana Ziluite (Acca Due O Pasta) all neared her time as the crowd waited for the duel between Lyne Bessette (Saturn) and Jeanson. Bessette had a strong ride, and for a moment it looked as though she may have set a winning time, however re-calculation of the splits eventually put her in second place behind Mactier and it wasn't until Jeanson took to the road that Mactier's time was beaten by just over three seconds. Jeanson was all smiles again after the finish as she faced the swarming journalists and fans, "I didn't expect to win today" She said "So, I am happy with my ride. My team helped me out on the course because they were finished before me. They were able to tell me the sharp turns and curves in the road to help me gain those extra seconds". Mactier was also pleased with her result, which back up her impressive fourth place in the World Cup on Saturday. Cyclingnews spoke with Mactier after the event "I am very excited with my ride, having just won the Australian National pursuit title I knew that preparation would benefit me today. Most importantly, we (Saturn) have three GC riders in the top four after the prologue. Rona will have a hard time defending the yellow". PhotographyImages by Kristy Scrymgeour/Cyclingnews.com
