Stage 3 - February 2: Kulim - Ipoh, 169.6 km

Two times the charm for Pagliarini

The victory smile said it all when Brazilian Luciano Pagliarini (Lampre) was introduced to a packed crowd on Jalan Bukit Gantang Wahab, opposite the main railway station in Ipoh.

Pagliarini had produced back-to-back wins in the Telekom Malaysia Le Tour de Langkawi after the conclusion of the 169.6km stage from Kulim to Ipoh this afternoon. As he sprinted clear of a thankfully intact peloton hurtling down the finishing straight close to 60 k's an hour, the smile on Pagliarini's was evident well before the finish line.

"At first, the sprint was a bit chaotic - just like yesterday - but then it all unfolded perfectly for me," said 24 year old Pagliarini.

"Everyone was fighting like crazy to be up front on the run-in, but my team looked after me perfectly and didn't miss anything. They were all confident I could make it two in a row and they got me into the right position to make it happen."

The tempo from the start was moderate, though Lars Ytting Bak (Team fakta) created a bit of a stir after 20 kilometres when he went clear but just before the first sprint of the day at Serdang. However, after just a few kilomtres of freedom, Bak was back in the bunch.

The first sprint won by Stuart O'Grady (Credit Agricole) spurred some activity in the peloton that saw several forays out front, but all were nullified until Italian Simone Mori (Telekom Malaysia) went clear after 46 kilometres.

Mori, winner of the inaugural Gamuda Eagle Tour back in August last year, set a steady rhythm with conditions conducive for a breakaway. Three kilometres later, Mori had company as Selamat Shahrizan (Malaysia), Thiery De Groote (Palmans-Colstrop) and Sirous Hashemzadeh (Iran) bridged the junction after 50km of racing.

Behind the break, Saturn were setting a tempo similar to yesterday's stage: a nice, steady tempo that kept their race leader Nathan O'Neill at ease.

The quartet had set the task of distancing themselves from the main peloton that was still all intact, and between them, they took out the two sprints at Taiping (86.7km) and Kuala Kangsar, (117.3km) as well as the category three climb of Bkt Berapit sandwiched in between, building a maximum lead of four minutes thirteen seconds.

With 120km of racing in their legs the time gap was beginning to waiver. At this juncture, a sudden injection of pace by Mori saw Shahrizan lose contact. Evidently, Mori was hell bent on delivering a victory for his team Telekom Malaysia, realising a victory gift was out of the question in a UCI 2.2 ranked event.

The remaining trio were finally reeled in with 10km to go in Ipoh that saw the Brazilian Luciano Pagliarini (Lampre) who, up until yesterday, had not won a professional race in his pro career, win convincingly over Moreno Di Biase (Formaggi Pinzolo Fiave') and Graeme Brown (Ceramiche Panaria-Fiordo).

According to race leader Nathan O’Neill of Saturn, "In the early stages there was a bit more jumping about than yesterday, but then it settled down into a steady rhythm which kept going all day, and that suited us."

"It was sad that we lost our ace sprinter Charles Dionne in yesterday's big crash, but it meant that the whole team could dedicate themselves to looking out for me rather than some having to help Charles get up front for the sprint, said O'Neill.

Among the Asian teams, the team from Iran were still all smiles after basking in the glory of yesterday's effort where they were declared best squad of the day.

"We were delighted with that result," commented Hossain Askari, who continues to hold the blue jersey of best Asian rider overall. "We don't even have our best rider on the squad - Gharder Mizbani is guesting on the Telekom Malaysia team, as he did in the last two Le Tour de Langkawi races."

“Absolutely chaotic is the only way to describe it and with 300 to go I was at 20th wheel and had to go and I didn’t know where and how but I had to go,” said Panaria sprinter Graeme Brown, who admits his team got it wrong in leading him out too early. “Sergey (Matveyev) was the strong guy who was supposed to hit the front with one kilometre to go and then swing off for Brett (Lancaster) at 500 metres from the line.

“But Sergey was on front with two kilometres to go and after that it turned to crap,” said Brown, acknowledging that Matveyev is understandably concerned for his safety. “He’s scared about how hectic it is because there are desperadoes sprinting for 20th and that makes it very dangerous.” But Brown says Pagliarini has deserved his victories. “Lampre gave him a perfect slingshot two days in a row but he had to put himself in the right position,” said Brown. “In a sense he had luck as well and we’ve been unlucky.”

“We’ve decided to change the plan tomorrow and have just Brett and I and we’ll just go ‘bang’ at 500 to go,” said Brown, adding they would try and hang onto another team train if possible. “If not I’ll jump on the green jersey’s wheel (Pagliarini) because if he gets the dream run again I’ll be in a perfect position on his wheel.”

“You could sense a little bit of caution amongst the guys,” said overall race leader Nathan O'Neill, referring to yesterday’s finish when two thirds of the riders, including O’Neill, were involved in two nasty crashes in the final kilometre of the stage. “I wanted to stay out of trouble and got the guys organised to be off to the side and a little bit behind all the chaos today.”

“It was fortunate we did that because there was a crash within the last kilometre and I had time to avoid it,” he said. “Then it was a case of opening up the burners for a couple of hundred metres towards the finish to close the gap which I did no problems.”

The peloton was fairly active in the early part of today’s race with an intermediate sprint coming at the 20 kilometre mark. It was won by Australian road champion, Stuart O’Grady, 29, (Credit Agricole) who gained a three second bonus to move into 19th place, 57 seconds behind O’Neill on the overall classification but the South Australian admits he is still settling in to the race. “I’m in recovery mode from Nationals and the Jacob’s Creek Tour Down Under and it will take a couple of days to run myself in,” said O’Grady who placed seventh on today’s stage. “The humidity means I’m not comfortable at all and it’s pretty difficult because I haven’t ever ridden in conditions like this.”

“Mind you I haven’t had a real crack at sprinting yet and after yesterday I’m happy to be alive,” said O’Grady who was fortunate to avoid the crashes of Stage 2 and today was right near the front. “I came around with a fair way to go and then found myself too far up front too early but in a few days we’ll see how my sprint goes.”

The jostling in the final two kilometres saw Ceramiche Panaria trying to set up Brown, Credit Agricole working to put O’Grady in position and Lampre protecting Pagliarini as he lined up for back to back wins. Also showing his colours at the front was Victorian David McKenzie, 28, (Flanders-iteamNova) who started today feeling the effects of yesterday’s crash which earned him four stitches in his right knee and a jarred right hip and shoulder. “My right arm is a bit of a worry because I can’t reach back into my pocket to get food but it’s good on the handlebars and that’s what counts.”

“I also had to get one of the guys to help me take my jersey off after the stage,” said McKenzie joking that in the Malaysian heat wearing the same jersey until his arm improves isn’t an option. “Crikey you wouldn’t want to do that here!”

Despite his post crash worries McKenzie looked in form as his team mate New Zealand’s Scott Guyton, led him up to the front two kilometre from home but McKenzie wasn’t able to stay on his wheel. “I was still there at fifth or sixth wheel then 500 metres to go a guy swung in front of me and I had to hit the brakes,” said McKenzie admitting he was also a little ‘gun shy’ after yesterday’s incident. “A couple of times it got a bit risky and there was a crash behind me but it could have been anywhere. So although I was being cautious I figured I may as well be up the front because then I’d be in a position to decide,” said McKenzie.

Tomorrow the riders face the 173 kilometre stage four which races north from Gerik, skirts the border with Thailand, and finishes in Tanah Merah. The stage includes two category one climbs and three intermediate sprints. “It shouldn’t be a problem tomorrow because it’s a long stage like today and the climbs come fairly early,” said O’Neill. “There’s still a hundred kilometres to go after the second king of the mountain so I’d say there’s a fair chance of the race regrouping.”

“Provided all the guys (Saturn team mates) get over the top no problems we should be able to set tempo and shut the gap down again so I don’t see it being a major drama,” he said. The Saturn team is racing one rider down after Canadian sprinter Charles Dionne fractured his left index finger and suffered extensive grazing on his left leg in yesterday’s crash. “It’s unfortunate because he was our ‘stage win guy’,” said O’Neill. “It’s a handicap to be one short but not having him also makes the job simpler because now we’re focussed just on riding to keep the jersey (leader’s) and for the overall.”
