8th Telekom Malaysia Le Tour de Langkawi - 2.2Malaysia, January 31 - February 9, 2003Home Results Previous stage Next stage Stage 9 - February 8: Seremban - Genting Highlands, 143.7 kmMunoz wins, but Danielson shines in yellowBy Anthony Tan in Genting Highlands Today's stage was always going to be decisive; the question was simply who would be the strongest up the 25 kilometre climb to Genting. Not surprisingly, it was in-form Colombian Hernan Dario Munoz (Colombia-Selle Italia) who cracked all but one of the 122 starters from Seremban to the Genting Highlands. The only rider to stay with Munoz stroke for stroke was the young revelation from Colorado, Tom Danielson (Saturn), who demonstrated experience, climbing prowess and cunning beyond his years, finishing just one second behind Munoz. "I knew he [Danielson] was a good rider and had good results in the past, but I thought I’d be able to get 14 seconds back," said Munoz. "But he was riding unbelievably strongly and although I kept trying I couldn’t drop him at all," he said, later admitting that perhaps his team had underestimated the "next big thing" in American cycling. The most aggressive rider was without a doubt Roland Green, who attacked incessantly on Genting's lower slopes. However, Green paid the price with just two kilometres remaining, allowing Munoz and Danielson to go clear and finished 39 seconds behind the Colombian. "I had my sights set on winning and knew it was up to me to attack as all the others weren’t going to press the pace at all, they were just going to watch each other," explained Green when asked about his race strategy going into the stage. "I had to push as hard as possible so I waited for the steeper parts but it just wasn’t enough. I did as much as I could but I’m still happy to win the King of the Mountain and third overall in my first race of the year," he added. Going into the final stage, a 75.6 kilometre circuit race around Kuala Lumpur, Danielson has a nine second buffer over Munoz and a 1:44 advantage on Martinez Freddy Gonzalez (Colombia-Selle Italia), which should be enough to grant the 24 year old American his biggest victory of his career. "His [Munoz] efforts kept getting a little bit harder each time and I thought if this is going to go on for another 10 kilometres or so then I’ll be in trouble,” admitted Danielson. “Like I said, normally I like to get into a rhythm and just ride people off my wheel, but because of the position I was in with the jersey, I had to stay on Munoz's wheel and deal with all the surges. But I felt great on every one and that was a good sign.” How it unfolded As per previous days, a packed crowd eagerly awaited the arrival of their favourite riders before the start of the most anticipated stage of the Le Tour de Langkawi. Temperatures were well up on yesterday - already in the high 30s by 11am - and by the time the 122 riders left the town of Seremban at a quarter to noon, the mercury had risen to a scorching 41 degrees Celsius. Apart from a few attacks early on, the pace for the first 60 kilometres would best be described as pedestrian (average speed after two hours of racing was 30.5km/h). The only significant breakaway before Genting occurred at the 63 kilometre mark when Belgian Peter Wuyts (Palmans-Collstrop) decided to go it alone, although his advantage was never a threat to the highest-placed riders on the overall classification. After 40 kilometres in no-man's land, Wuyts was predictably swallowed up shortly after the field hit the lower slopes of Genting, the peloton driven by Saturn strongmen Nathan O'Neill and Chris Horner for their man Tom Danielson. On this most vicious of climbs, the yellow jersey group soon withered away to a select group of 12 riders as O'Neill and Horner set a cracking tempo for the first five kilometres. Once these two had done their day at the office, it was Roland Green who became the protagonist behind a series of attacks that further reduced an already heavily depleted field. Green's moves, however, inspired a devastating counterattack by Jose Rujano (Colombia-Selle Italia) with Rujano joined by Paolo Lanfranchi (Panaria-Fiordo) one kilometre later. For a while, it appeared that Rujano and Lanfranchi would stay away to the finish, but behind them lay the three strongest climbers on the day. Within a matter of minutes, the leading duo were passed by Green, Danielson and Munoz in overdrive; the winner would now come from one of these three - Munoz being the most experienced, Danielson the greenest and Green the most confident. Perhaps the world mountain bike champion was a little too confident though, as the Canadian was unable to follow the second of Munoz's final attacks; only Danielson could match the wiry Colombian when he launched himself out of the saddle with two kilometres to go. Until now, Danielson had played his cards perfectly - only following, never attacking - but coming into the final kilometre, young Danielson showed a touch of inexperience, going wide on the final corners and in doing so, handing the stage win to Munoz on a platter. But today, Danielson rode out of his skin and barring disaster, will the overall winner of the 2003 LTdL. Green was the only other rider to finish within a minute of Munoz, although great rides were also done by Munoz's teammates Freddy Gonzalez Martinez (at 1:25) and Ruber Alveiro Marin (2:03), South African David George (2:52) and Australian Allan Iacuone (2:53). "I knew I couldn’t hold the rhythm [in the lead group] and a lot of guys would explode later on but once I got dropped and I thought ‘Oh no, I’m having a bad day,'" said Iacuone. "But I just kept my rhythm in the second group and kept control of things, and once we hit the steep part I started to come good.” Munoz wins stage but Danielson holds leadAdditional reporting by Gennie Sheer Defending Tour de Langkawi champion, Hernan Dario Munoz (Colombia Selle Italia) repeated his feat of 2002 to win the penultimate stage in the Genting Highlands north of Kuala Lumpur but, unlike last year, his main rival of this tour, American Tom Danielson (Saturn) would not say die and crossed only one second later to maintain his hold on the race lead. Third across the line was reining World Mountain Bike Champion, Roland Green of Canada who was 39 seconds behind the Colombian stage winner who covered the 143 kilometre stage in 4.15.30. The trio were basically the last men standing after a titanic battle up the gut wrenching mountain which saw riders dropping off the back from the 20 kilometres to go sign. But at the front the climbers were trying all the tricks. Colombia Selle Italia had three other men in play who launched repeated attacks in an effort to soften up Danielson and Green for Munoz. Green chased them down each time but Danielson refused to be distracted and stayed glued to Munoz shadowing him to the summit. "I was a little nervous that we were outnumbered but Roland did so much work that my hat's off to him," said Danielson. "Today he brought back so many of the little Colombian attacks that he deserves the King of the Mountain jersey and he was fantastic." For his part Green went into the stage with his eyes on the champion's trophy. "I had my sights set on winning and knew it was up to me to attack as all the others weren't going to press the pace at all, they were just going to watch each other," explained Green. "So I did a lot of attacking which was what I had to do." "I had to push as hard as possible so I waited for the steeper parts and attacked but it just wasn't enough," said Green who lost touch with Danielson and Munoz with two kilometres remaining. "I did as much as I could but I'm still happy to win the King of the Mountain and third overall in my first race of the year." Then Munoz went on the attack. "Normally (Roland and I) like to light it up all the way on the climb, go hard from the bottom and ride it as hard as we could but the race played out a little differently," said Danielson who instead of being proactive chose to cover Munoz. "I never really gutted myself but he (Munoz) was definitely putting in great efforts and I didn't know what to expect." "His (Munoz) efforts kept getting a little bit harder each time and I thought if this is going to go on for another 10 kilometres or so then I'll be in trouble," admitted Danielson. "Like I said normally I like to get a rhythm and just ride people off my wheel but because of the position I was in with the jersey I had to stay on his (Munoz) wheel and deal with all the surges." "I felt great though on every one and that was a good sign." It might have been good for the young American who has aspirations of riding the Tour de France but for Munoz, who came to Malaysia on the back of a victory in January in a 14 day stage race in Venezuela, it wasn't good news at all. "I knew he (Danielson) was a god rider and had good results in the past but I thought I'd be able to get 14 seconds back," said Munoz. "But he was riding unbelievably strongly and although I kept trying I couldn't drop him at all." Munoz repeatedly told media how unbelievable he found Danielson's ride and admitted that perhaps his team had underestimated the talent of the Colorado native. For the Australians Allan Iacuone (Flanders iteamNova) enjoyed a return to the form that saw him place third overall in Malaysia in 1999. The Victorian used his previous knowledge of the climb to set his own pace rather than reacting to attacks all the way up the climb. He crossed the line in tenth place 2.53 behind Munoz. "I knew I couldn't hold that rhythm and a lot of guys would explode later on but once I got dropped and I thought "oh no' I'm having a bad day," explained Iacuone. "But I just kept my rhythm in the second group and kept control of things and once we hit the steep part I started to come good and I thought I can catch these guys so I went." Iacuone surged ahead passing several rivals who had gone too hard too early but with two kilometre to go admits he had "nothing left in the tank'. But he had South African David George in his sights and that inspired him to get out of the saddle for one more surge. "I knew there was a fast bit of downhill just before the finish but I didn't realise how sharp that last corner was because last year we came up the other way," said Iacuone. "If I had gone underneath him (on the corner) I would have got him so it's a shame really." His performance today moved him from 44th place into twelfth overall. Reigning Australian road champion, Stuart O'Grady (Credit Agricole) went into the stage one second behind Danielson on the overall standings and only five points in arrears of fellow Australian Graeme Brown (Ceramiche Panaria Fiordo) in the green points jersey competition. At one stage today O'Grady was technically the leader on the road after picking up a two second bonus on the first of three intermediate sprints but knowing Genting was ahead O'Grady did not sprint too hard. "I wasn't too interested in the green jersey and I said to Browny "I'm not sprinting before that mountain," said O'Grady who yo-yoed up the climb. "It's about as tough as everyone said although I probably had some bonus parts in the middle where I could get a bigger gear going but it was bloody hard." "I struggled a bit early and then got a good rhythm and then blew about two kilometres to go and once you know you're not really there for the win or a good GC (overall) everything fades." O'Grady rode across the line in 23rd place, 5.02 behind the winner but remains pleased with his performance overall in his first Tour de Langkawi appearance. "I'm rapt with the Tour so far as I came here planning on winning one stage and I've won two," said O'Grady who now sits 14th overall. "Plus my form shows that I'm going pretty well and we'll put it on for tomorrow as well." But tomorrow Brown has his eyes on repeating last year's final stage victory to clinch his third for this year and his fifth in two appearances in Malaysia. "It's the same plan as last year but last year I wasn't in the sprint jersey," said Brown. "We worked hard today out on the road to get some points on Stuey (O'Grady) and now I'm about twelve points in front of him so it's comfortable for the green jersey." However the sprint efforts heading towards the Genting climb took their toll on Brown who was in one of the first groups to be dropped. " I rode up with Brett Lancaster who's been like my right hand man and he was always there in case I was in trouble," said Brown who has suffered stomach upsets for most of the Tour . "Five kilometres from home I got stomach cramps again and I wanted to stop but I couldn't cause it was on a hill." "It (the climb) hurt a bit but I got over it last year and won the last stage so hopefully I can do that again." Meantime Queensland's Nathan O'Neill (Saturn) was in obvious pain when he crossed the line 8min58sec behind Munoz in 42nd place. O'Neill had worn the leader's yellow jersey for the first seven days after claiming in through his decisive win on the stage one time trial. But a crash 1100 metres from the finish of stage seven saw him relinquish the lead to his team mate Danielson. The crash left him with a hole in his left elbow and numerous cuts and grazes. "I'm pretty banged up and feel like I've been run over by a truck," said O'Neill. "Apart from my arm my whole body aches from head to toe, my neck's stiff and my legs are so sore and everything is just a mess." "But I'm not making excuses because I actually had a pretty good ride up Genting today, it's just that I just suffered heaps," he said. "Every year I do this climb and every year I say it's the hardest thing I've ever done." "I don't think it gets any harder it's just my memory," O'Neill added. "I forget how hard it was last time." But O'Neill who is riding his first tour in Saturn colours said his team was the main thing on his mind. "It was easier knowing Tom (Danielson) was in the front and I just had to keep the tail up for teams' competition," he explained. "We won the race which is what we came to do and we led from start to finish which is more than we expected to do so personally I'm ecstatic." Tomorrow the riders will saddle up for the final stage to complete the 1343 kilometre, ten day event. They'll contest 12 laps of a 6.3kilometre circuit in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.
