Borgo claims sprint win as Australia and Japan battle to top the gold medal
count
Wollongong's Rebecca Borgo has upset top seed Lucy Stewart of Canberra to
take out the women's sprint on day two of cycling competition at the Dunc Gray
Velodrome.
Borgo defeated Stewart in straight heats in the best of three (12.923, 13.045)
to decide the gold and silver medals and the result was a repeat of last year's
U/19 Australian Championships where Borgo claimed the crown.
"Lucy and I are the best of friends and we ride against each other all the
time so we know each other's strengths and weaknesses inside out," said Borgo
after her win. "The advantage I have over her is that I have a big kick (ability
to accelerate quickly) and I used that in the first match up."
"In the second race I saw I had a gap and just went for it."
Both are 17 years old and represented Australia at last year's Junior World
Titles in Melbourne as first year juniors. They hope to again pair up for Australia
in the USA at this year's junior worlds.
"We were really the babies of the field last year but we hope that we can
push each other all the way to a one-two finish in the sprint at this year's
junior worlds," said Borgo. "We don't care which of us gets which but we want
an Aussie gold and silver."
That plan has been helped by this week's competition which Borgo says has
given the pair more experience to help them achieve their goal.
"It's a big international competition and it gives us another taste of independence
which can only help us to prepare for overseas," Borgo explained.
Japan's Masumi Shinozaki proved too strong for Tasmanian Kirby Piscioneri
defeating her Australian rival in two straight heats (13.320, 12.602) to claim
the bronze medal.
The men's sprint finals were an all Japanese affair. Tsubasa Kitatsura out
rode his team mate Yudai Nitta to win gold in straight heats (12.043, 11.896).
The race for bronze went to a third heat decider after Yuichi Matsuda took the
first heat in 12.043 but Shugo Hayasaka fought back to take the second heat
in 12.061. Matsuda recovered in the third to secure bronze in 11.592.
Kitatsura, whose nickname is ‘Wing" certainly flew in today's racing claiming
another gold in the afternoon session where he posted a time of 1min06.721sec
to win the 1 kilometre time trial. But the Fuluoka native says he was a little
disappointed with his time.
"I had hoped to better my personal best time of 1:06.05 which I rode on an
outdoor track in Japan last June," he said. "But the conditions were too cold
today for me to fly faster."
Matsuda had to again settle for second behind his team mate covering the kilometre
in 1:07.954 for silver. West Australian Leigh Sunderland ensured the Australian
flag flew by claiming bronze in 1:08.058.
The women's 500m time trial event went to Shinozaki, who holds the U/19 Japanese
record for the distance. She posted a time of 37.848sec to edge out Borgo in
37.931 with Piscioneri third in 38.914.
Japan might have only sent ten cyclists to the AYOF but they have made sure
they're in top form. After two days of competition the Japanese have claimed
three gold, two silver and two bronze, a total of seven, of the 24 medals awarded.
Australia with 73 competitors has five gold, six silver and five bronze, a
total of 16 while New Zealand, who sent a team of five, has one bronze medal.
In the scratch racing the Australians dominated both the men's and women's
events to put them back on top of the gold medal tally (Australia five gold
- Japan three gold after eight events).
South Australian Renee Braithwaite put in a very strong ride to claim the
7.5km women's scratch race ahead of last night's individual pursuit gold medallist
Stephanie Williams of Tasmania. Alice King claimed the bronze to give New Zealand
its first cycling medal of the AYOF.
In the men's 10 kilometre event it was an Australian podium clean sweep. Everyone's
race tactics were disrupted when Takahiko Fujino (Jap) and Dean Windsor of Bathhurst
crashed with seven of the 40 laps remaining. Both remounted their bikes unscathed
but too late to rejoin the race.
The rest of the field reorganised and it was larrikin Bexley boy, Warren Scott,
who sped to the front in the final metres to clinch gold ahead of Dubbo's Andrew
Taylor with Michael Ford of Melbourne third.
"It was a mistake," said a deadpan Scott. "I was supposed to be leading out
Andrew and when I came round he got on my wheel but couldn't get past me."
Scott, affectionately called ‘The Mouth' by his mother and Wazza by the rest
of the cycling fraternity who all seem to know the outgoing 17 year old, had
in fact set his sights on a win in the kilometre time trial.
"I really wanted that one and I had the fastest time on the board with half
a lapo (125 metres) to go," said Scott who finished just out of the medals in
fourth. "But I blew up towards the end."
Tomorrow the fast men will be in action for the team sprint competition with
Japan favourites after their impressive sprint performances. Japan will also
be favourites in the men's keirin heats coming from a country where keirin racing
(a sport the Japanese gamble billions of Yen on each year) is as popular the
popularity as horse racing is in Australia.
The women's keirin will see Borgo and Stewart line up again in the hope they
can both make the final and continue their ‘one-two' finish.
The endurance riders will contest the points races with the women's final
being raced over 20km and the men's 25km. Saturday's racing starts at 1.00pm.
Tomorrow is the final day of racing on the track. On Sunday (9.30am) the riders
will move outside to the Criterium Circuit adjacent to the Dunc Gray Velodrome
to contest the final two medals of the cycling competition.
