8th Tour of South China Sea - 2.5China, December 25, 2003 - January 1, 2004Stages listing Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 7 - December 31: Coloane (Macau), 92 kmKovac takes stage but Grishkin hangs onBy Gudo Kramer The 7th stage of the Tour of South China Sea on the hilly Coloane course in Macau was won by Maros Kovac from Dukla Trencin Slovakia, who beat Cameron Hughes (Bicisport) and Richard Ondryas (ASC Dukla Praha) to the top of the 2 km finishing climb. But the big story of the day was a move from Kam Po Wong from Hong Kong. He attacked with five laps to go with two other riders: Alexey Kolessov from Kazakhstan and Robert Nagy from Dukla Trencin. The Moscow team with leader Oleg Grishkin was never worried of course, and they kept the leaders within one minute and rotated on the front with their whole team. All the work that Wong had to do in front was wearing the Chinese Champion down, and Oleg Grishkin had a relatively easy ride to keep the leader's jersey after they recaptured Wong. The race on the 9 km circuit saw an early break of two riders: Shaun O'Neill (City of Perth) and Liu Yan (Guangdong) have a go, but they got caught back quite quickly. The next group of seven looked more serious, but also could not stay away as there were too many teams in the pack that wanted their climbers in front at the beginning of the steep 2 km climb leading towards the statue of the Goddess A-Ma. A-Ma lived in the region around 1000 AD and Macau was named after her. Her statue is standing 199.9 metres above sea level, where the climb started. Note that there is a 300 metre downhill at 500 metres to go, making the rest of the climb around 12-15% average! When the seven were caught with six laps to go, it was Kam Po Wong who couldn't control his nerves anymore and attacked. The Russians let the three man group take an advantage of 1 minute and then started their train. For three laps the distance was around 40 seconds and then they started coming closer, but only caught Wong, Kolessov and Nagy in the last lap. At the foot of the climb there was a crash caused by an inexperienced Chinese rider. One of the victims was Cameron Hughes, when he got going again however, he managed to sprint up the mountain into second place. The climb perfectly suited Wong, who won many races with short, steep climbs, but he had lost his strength already and could not get rid of race leader Grishkin. Wong was short in his comments. "I wanted to try and control the race by being in the front," he said. Of course he was afraid there would be another leading group taking the bonus seconds he needed to win this Tour if he was not there, but 50 km on the front was too much as he didn't manage to finish in front of Oleg Grishkin and Peter Milostic. Milostic won a few seconds over Wong and Grishkin, which brings him to the same time as Wong in third place, Wong is second as he has more points. Milostic gave it all he had on the last climb, collapsing after the finish and lying on the ground for a few minutes, and he wasn't the only rider that couldn't stand on his legs anymore behind the line. The chances are small that the Oceanian Time Trial Champion will come closer in the last stage, a 66km criterium in front of the Jockey Club in Macau, but anything is possible. Grishkin was happy, he held onto his lead and with a strong team around him, his Tour win is sure, provided he does not crash tomorrow. A sixth stage win in this eight day race is also possible for the fast Russian sprinters tomorrow. "My team did a great job, it was a very hard for them, the three riders in front were going fast. For me it was easy until the last climb. I could see the number three [Milostic] and Wong were behind me, so no problem!" PhotographyImages by Francis Cerny/Nikon Camera
