Stage 8 - January 1: Jockey Club Square (Macau), 66km
Russian train powers to the finish

The last stage of the Tour of the South China Sea, a 66 km criterium in front of the famous Macau Jockey Club, has been won by Sergey Koudentsov. It was his second stage victory and the 6th stage win out of eight stages by his Omnisports team from Moscow. As Kouznetsov's teammate Oleg Grishkin was the overall winner of this tour, it was clear that the team from Moscow was the strongest in the last race of 2003 and first race in 2004. Kam Po Wong finished second overall on the same time as Peter Milostic (third). Wong lacked the support of a strong team around him and tried to do it all by himself in the seventh stage. This was the moment that Grishkin needed his team most.
"It has been a very hard tour for my team, as they had to chase many breaks down," said Grishkin after the race. "I only did my job, giving it the best I can in the sprints."
The criterium on the first day of the new year was a very fast and spectacular race. Spectacular, not in the least because of many crashes. The main victims were Tim Wilson of Marco Polo and Tim Decker of Bicisport Australia, two teams that have had a lot of bad luck already during the 8th Tour of South China Sea. Wilson crashed out of the GC and bruised his calf, but he should be OK. Tim Decker had to go to hospital, but the diagnosis was OK and he returned to the hotel safely.

There were many crashes in the Tour of South China Sea - a combination of inexperienced riders from mainly Chinese teams, riders taking crazy risks and sometimes slippery parts of the courses. In general though, it's hard to imagine safer courses than in this race.
The fast circuit made it possible for many riders to attack. The spectators saw very active teams, especially from Guangdong, Beijing/Macau and Marco Polo. There were attacks all the time and most attacks were brought back by new attackers. When the Moscow team had to chase a group down, it was often race leader Grishkin who did this personally.
There were three serious threats to his final victory. Kam Po Wong (once) and Peter Milostic (twice) really gave it a try and as they both 'only' needed 11 seconds and a stage win bonus to win the tour, this caused some unrest in the Russian ranks.
With only three laps to go the complete Russian train was launched again and this time it was Grishkin who pulled the sprint for Sergey Koudentsov. A Marco Polo move by Chris Baumann and Felix Rohrbach threatened to give Rohrbach the best position in the last corner, only 150 meters from the finish, but Grishkin 'closed the door professionally' on the inside and this gave Koudentsov a sure win with Blaha (Dukla Praha) taking second and Rohrbach in third.
