Tour of Georgia - 2.3Georgia, USA, April 22-27, 2003Main Page Live report Results Previous stage Next stage Stage 4 - April 26: Dalton - Gainesville, 176kmNo Deliverance for Vogels and NavigatorsSaturn onslaught propels Horner into race lead; Rodriguez wins againBy Tim Maloney, European Editor in Atlanta, Georgia With the dogwoods blooming among the beautiful hills of the Chatahoochee National Forest, not far from where the cult film Deliverance was shot, Henk Vogels (Navigators) was hoping to hang on to his race leader's jersey today at the Tour of Georgia, but it was the dueling banjos of Team Saturn and Chris Horner who played the tune today. And Henk just couldn't dance the tune. After three good days clad in the leader's jersey, Henk couldn't match the incredible drive of Saturn on a parcours that didn't particularly suit the powerfully built Vogels. "They [Saturn] were just too strong for us today; they have very good climbers and I wasn't strong enough on the climb to stay with the front group," explained a disappointed Vogels. Once dropped by the Saturn surge up Woody Gap, Vogels chased hard, but was not with the right chase group and ended up losing 12'27" on the stage, dropping the Aussie to 37th on gc. "It wasn't too bad of a climb, but once there was a gap and we hit the rollers (after the Woody Gap climb) my group just couldn't get across to the main chase group." At the Navigators team van, DS Ed Beamon was more philosophical than down after his squad lost the jersey, and explained to Cyclingnews that "[Navigators] was on Saturn's playing field and that made it tough for us today. Still, we had a good race and can be satisfied." Vogels backed up his director's point of view, and said afterwards "My boys were awesome the last few days and I'm really happy with the great results here." Around the corner at the Saturn team van, the mood was more upbeat, as a delighted Chris Horner exclaimed "This [the leader's jersey] was what we wanted. Today we went hard and this wasn't no gimmee... those were hard climbs today and my Saturn teammates rode great for me today." Horner's teammate and Tour of Langkawi winner Tom Danielson was pleased to be part of Saturn's winning effort today; "It was great to work for Chris today and it was a tough stage. I'm learning a lot here and I wanted to show people I'm not just a climber, that I wouldn't blow on the flats." Tour De Georgia prologue winner Nathan O'Neill echoed his teammate's sentiments when he described the positive vibes flowing at Saturn this season. "Last year I was on an Italian team and it was so old school. At Saturn we have developed a different sense of morale... we're really willing to put it on the line for the next guy." Saturn DS Anje Bek was as happy as his riders; the Polish born Bek is a former assistant director on the Coors Light squad and this time last year, Bek was driving a semi for a living after leaving USA Cycling in 1999. His arrival at Saturn, along with Horner, O'Neill and Danielson has helped bring Saturn to another level this season. Fred Rodriguez's day turned bittersweet when the Emeryville, CA native looked at the GC after his stage win. After Rodriguez took the 10 second time bonus for the win, Tour De Georgia race leader Horner is now 18 seconds ahead of Rodriguez. But had it not been for the 20" penalty incurred on stage 1's starting circuits, the gap betwen Rodriguez and Horner might be much closer. "My injury in my left leg was bothering me and in the last 10K, it felt like I was only riding with one leg," Fast Freddy told Cyclingnews post-stage. "It's too bad about the penalty Fred got," said the Vini Caldirola-Sidermec director. "But this is still a very good race and we are happy we came." USPS had an excellent day at the Tour de Georgia, winning the day's team classification. Floyd Landis rode out hard in front, pulling an early break for much of the day. Subsequently, three of his teammates, Michael Barry, Dave Zabriskie and mountain bike champion Roland Green made the key break of the race. Barry looked especially strong in the final and made several bids for freedom on the run-in to Gainesville but was always reeled in. Another team that made all the right moves today was Flanders-Iteamnova. The modest Aussie-Belgian outfit had been quiet up until now, biding their time until today's queen stage. Allan Iacuone made the key break and sprinted in for 3rd on the stage, while his teammate Scott Guyton was 9th, just off the front of the chase group. Both Iacuone and Guyton moved into the top 10 on GC today, certainly giving Flanders-Iteamnova the "little team that could" award at the Tour de Georgia. On the flipside, Prime Alliance wasn't able to follow Saturn's key move today up Woddy Gap that blew the Tour de Georgia wide open. Look for Dave Clinger to try and move past Scott Guyton into the top 10, who is equal with him on time. With Danny Pate sitting in 12th, 1'40" back and 7-Up's John Lieswyn 3" ahead in 9th, also watch for a struggle between PA & 7-Up to move Pate past Lieswyn. Sunday's final stage 5 will wrap up the Georgia tour in a 142km circuit race in Atlanta. It's nine laps of a mostly flat course through NE Atlanta and will have three intermediate time sprints on laps 2, 4 and 6 for 3, 2 and 1 seconds as well as the final sprint worth 10, 6 and 4 seconds. The final outcome in the Georgia race is stil up for grabs, but expect Saturn to defend Horner's lead voraciously to ensure final victory. PhotosImages by Jonathan Devich/thefastrack.com
