Tour of Georgia - 2.3Georgia, USA, April 22-27, 2003Main Page Live report Results Previous stage Next stage Stage 3 - April 25: Pine Mountain/Callaway - Rome, 222kmRodriguez romps in RomeSyne Of The Times with 150km break from Webcor livens things up; Navigators and Saturn marching to different drummersBy Tim Maloney, European Editor in Rome, Georgia With the wet and windy weather that swept across western Georgia Friday morning, Stage 3 from Pine Mountain / Callaway Gardens looked to be a slog today, but you have to give Lionel Syne credit; the 26 year old former mountainbiker from Stavelot, Belgium decided to liven up things today at the Tour De Georgia and he probably got more fun than he reckoned for. "This race has been no fun the last two days; I'm an aggressive rider and I wanted to make something happen," explained Syne after the race. "I like the bad weather too and the roads were like my native Ardennes so I just went for it," said the Webcor rider. "I was trying to help (teammate) Steve Larsen so he could be in the late moves." Syne was out front for over 150km while behind the Webcore rider, polemics marked today's different approach to racing between Navigators and Saturn. Navigators director Ed Beamon told Cyclingnews that, "with the lousy weather our options were either to ride tempo all day and considering the weather and length of the stage, that was the least desirable option to defend (Henk Vogels) yellow jersey. Otherwise, we could have just covered and countered every move. In the big picture, our goal was to keep the Tour de Georgia leader's jersey on Henk's back another day and we achieved that. We were confident that Saturn would be our biggest threat, so we didn't want to focus on every little break that went up the road... we weren't about to panic today." However, Saturn's Chris Horner, currently sitting in second place on general classification, just six seconds behind Vogels had strong words for Beamon's Navigator's team. "It was an embarrassment for them," Horner told Cyclingnews post-stage today. "They were just afraid to ride today... it was the least they could do was to chase. (Saturn) is obligated to help out but we shouldn't have to ride on the front all day. Thanks to Saturn, Henk still has the yellow jersey tonight." Horner's strong words were echoed by his team director Anje Bek, who said, "What, should (Saturn) just give the race away by not chasing?" As they say in rural Georgia, them's fightin' words and Saturday's Stage 4 should be a battle royale between the two top American teams fighting it out for the first major stage race title on US soil since 1996. Unfortunately, Navigators will be missing their climbing big gun Chris Wherry, who abandoned on Stage 3. Navigators director Beamon told Cyclingnews that he was still tired from a bout with the flu while in Europe and hasn't yet recovered. Fast Freddy Rodriguez has few complaints after finally notching a Tour de Georgia stage victory in Rome; the Vini Caldirola man was shut out yesterday in Columbus but took a solid victory in a driving rainstorm reminiscent of his stage win in the Tour of Langkawi in 1999 in similar conditions. Rodriguez was doubly satisfied, as his win propelled the Emeryville, CA rider into lead for the sprint jersey. "It felt good to finally get this win; I still have injuries but I wanted this one. Too bad the officials penalized me 20 seconds the other day or I would be in position to win the overall race here." Five hours before Rodriguez romped to victory in Roma, Lionel Syne made his break soon after the peloton exited Callaway Gardens, and like a battery powered bunny, he just kept going and going and going all day. The rain had stopped well before the start and with a nice tailwind and little or no chase from behind, the powerfully built Webcor sprinter had built up a lead of 16.50 after 90km of racing. Sierra Nevada-Clif Bar's sprinter Matt Dubberly got impatient and decided to go after Syne, despite the best advice of his team director Mike Neel. "Matt's a good all-round rider with a fast finish but he just got impatient," said Neel. Dubberly gained time for a while but Syne had great legs today and just couldn't catch the Belgian. Eventually Prime Alliance's Jonathan Vaughters got antsy as the peloton rolled along at piano pace of 30km/hr and let Syne's lead ballooned. Vaughters bridged to Dubberly and this was the signal to Saturn that they were simply not going to let a rider as dangerous as Vaughters get a long way down the road to Rome. As Vaughters and Dubberly crossed the muddy, swollen Tallapoosa River and climbed to the second feed zone of the day, Syne was still five minutes up the road, but the Saturn-led peloton was soon breathing down their necks and looking likely to absorb the duo. As the skies opened with a dramatic thunderstorm, the Belgian hardman hung tough, but the long miles and the weather began to take its toll and by the Polk County line after 165km, his lead was down to 3.30. The fast-moving thunderstorm and fast-moving peloton had soaked Syne's chances for good. With 30km to go to Rome at the Cedartown sprint, Syne squeaked across ahead of the hard-charging bunch, but the peloton sucked him up and made a right hand turn onto Lake Creek Road, the first small roads that the Tour De Georgia has raced on so far. Immediately the attacks began and another one of Mike Neel's Sierra Nevada-Clif Bar riders got away. Adam Sbieh got a good lead and soon two riders bridged across, Webcor's Steve Larsen and 7-Up's Kiwi fast man Greg Henderson. "I was just trying to see what we could do," said ex-Motorola pro Larsen. "We got on those little roads and I said to myself, 'man I have to attack'". The trio gained a minute by Boozeville, GA., had 1.30 by the final mountain sprint and held off the chase until entering the finishing circuits. "If we could have only held them off until the circuits, I thought I had a chance, but we just got caught too soon," a philosophical Larsen told Cyclingnews. By that time, the skies had opened up again, soaking Rome and the peloton once again. Fast Freddy romped home a winner and the stage is now set for the dramatic penultimate stage of the Tour de Georgia. Saturday's Stage 4 from Dalton to Gainesville will likely be the deciding stage in this inaugural Tour de Georgia. First on the menu is the 13km ascent up Fort Mountain (866m) that gains 640m after 44km of racing. Then the course traverses tough rolling terrain through Ellijay and across the Chattahoochee National Forest for 70km, through the same dark piney woods where the film Deliverance was shot. Stage 4's second KOM comes after 141km, after a 10km climb up to Woody Gap that will provide a further selection in the Tour de Georgia. But the Woody Gap climb comes with 55 mostly downhill kilometers to race to the finish, which should provide a possibility for a regrouping of strong riders before Gainesville.
