Tour de Romandie - 2.HCSwitzerland, April 29 - May 3, 2003Main Page Results Previous stage Next stage Stage 4 - May 3: Mothney - Les Paccots, 146.5 kmDouble revenge for PerezBy Jeff Jones In hindsight, Francisco Perez's wrong turn with 1.5 km to go that cost him victory in yesterday's stage could well give him the overall victory in the Tour de Romandie, provided he rides well in tomorrow's tough 20 km time trial in Lausanne. Perez more than made up for his misfortune yesterday by winning today's queen stage of the Tour de Romandie, which finished at the top of a short but tough climb in Les Paccots. His winning margin over the main favourites, including race leader Laurent Dufaux, was 31 seconds. That, combined with his stage win bonus gives him 29 seconds over Dufaux, 35 to Alexandre Moos and 43 seconds to Tyler Hamilton on the general classification with one stage to come. Had Perez won the stage yesterday, he could well have found himself in the leader's jersey, and thus would have been more closely marked by the top riders today. Coupled with his excellent climbing powers, a brilliant Milaneza-MSS team, and a strong desire to make up for the stage 3 debacle, Perez rode to victory today after catching and dropping Eddy Mazzoleni (Sidermec), who had attacked with 9 kilometres to go. Mazzoleni hung on to finish second, while Perez's teammate Fabian Jeker took the sprint for third. "I'm very satisfied," Perez told Swiss TV after the stage. "The team did a great job and we had perfect tactics in the finale. I thought I had to go with 5 kilometres to go to have a chance. It was unbelievable. It was a little bit of revenge for yesterday." How it unfoldedOnce again the peloton was treated to excellent weather conditions for the fourth and hardest stage of the Tour de Romandie. Measuring just 146.5 kilometres, the stage featured three category 1 climbs and a category 2 climb to finish. The peloton observed a minute's silence at the start, in memory of a moto rider who died during yesterday's stage. Once the stage got going, the attacks started early, with Milaneza keen to go on the offensive. On the first climb (Col des Mosses, km 31) they had David Bernabeu and Joan Horrach in a break, along with Steve Zampieri (Vini Caldirola - Sidermec), Egoi Martinez (Euskaltel), Marco Fertonani (Phonak) and Dario Cioni (Fassa Bortolo). The peloton would not let them go too far ahead however, and kept the gap under a minute and a half. After the halfway point, the gap to the six leaders gradually began to fall, mainly through the efforts of the CSC and Alessio teams. When Bernabeu punctured in the leading group with 42 km to go, Egoi Martinez decided to attack, prompting a series of similar moves by the other riders. In the end, Martinez got away with Horrach, and the pair had a 1'10 lead to the peloton at the foot of the Vallon Villard climb with 29 km to go. On the climb, the two riders found the pull of gravity hard to resist, and quickly came back to the peloton. Milaneza was actually doing most of the tempo making on the tough climb, with four riders on the front as well as the lone Horrach. The first rider to catch Horrach was his teammate Francisco Perez, and the pair worked for a while until Horrach dropped off, leaving Perez out on his own. Then the Milaneza plan began to fall into place, as first Claus Möller then Fabian Jeker bridged up to Francisco Perez with five kilometres to go before the top of the climb. With three Milaneza riders in front, there was panic in the peloton, which was split into several groups by this stage. Tyler Hamilton (CSC) and Alexandre Moos (Phonak) managed to get up to the leading trio, and the five went over the top of the climb with 20 seconds to three chasers: Eddy Mazzoleni (Sidermec), Alberto Martinez (Euskaltel) and Carlos Sastre (CSC). Race leader Laurent Dufaux was in the next group at 50 seconds, and his yellow jersey was greatly in danger. Dufaux used all of his local knowledge to bridge back up to the leaders on the descent, and suddenly there were 25 riders in the peloton again with 12 kilometres to go. The warm feeling of togetherness did not last long however, as Eddy Mazzoleni attacked shortly afterwards, gradually increasing his lead to around 30 seconds to the peloton. After a failed counter by Alexandre Moos, it was the turn of Francisco Perez to attack for the second time, going after Mazzoleni with 6 km to go, with the peloton reluctant to chase. Mazzoleni was riding strongly, but Perez was clearly on a mission to catch him. As they started the final climb to Les Paccots, Perez gave it everything to close the gap to the Italian. He did so, and with one kilometre to go Mazzoleni couldn't follow him any more, and had to settle for second place. Perez had a lead of 35 seconds at this point, and it was clear that he would win the stage and take the yellow. In the final straight he made sure he didn't take the team car deviation this time, and was able to take a well earned victory salute, his biggest career win to date. The Tour de Romandie will finish tomorrow with a 20 kilometre individual time trial in Lausanne. With the top six all within a minute of each other on GC, a change in the overall classification is quite possible, with Dufaux, Moos, Hamilton, Jeker and Sastre all close. But Francisco Perez can time trial too, and the uphill final part of the course will suit him. PhotographyImages by Jeff Tse/www.jefftse.com/cycling
