Tour de Romandie - 2.HCSwitzerland, April 29 - May 3, 2003Main Page Results Previous stage Next stage Stage 3 - May 2: Moudon - Lèoche les Baines, 171.3 kmSo close and yet so far for PerezLocal boy Dufaux takes stage and overallBy Jeff Jones Milaneza climber Francisco Perez came agonisingly close to winning the third stage of the Tour de Romandie, but a missed turn inside the final two kilometres saw him go off course and completely lose any chance of victory. It was bad luck for the lanky Spaniard, who had attacked with 8 kilometres to go on the final climb to try and secure the stage win. But Perez's misfortune was good luck for local favourite Laurent Dufaux (Alessio), who rode strongly to beat Fabian Jeker (Milaneza) and Alexandre Moos (Phonak) in the sprint in Lèoche les Baines. The stage win gave Dufaux the overall lead, while Perez, who eventually crossed the line five minutes behind the winner, had to be consoled with an equal first place and the same time, which put him at third in the overall standings. The third stage from Moudon to Lèoche les Baines contained one minor difficulty (Cat. 3 Croisée Sierre, km 139) and one major difficulty (Cat. 1 Loèche-Les-Bains, km 169.8), with the summit of the latter coming at just under two kilometres to go to the finish. Crucially for the outcome of the stage, the last two kilometres consisted of a very technical descent into Lèoche les Baines and a final uphill sprint. Race leader Simone Bertoletti was well protected by his Lampre teammates throughout the stage, but it was fairly clear that being a non-climber, he would struggle to maintain his one minute advantage over the rest of the field. Unlike the previous two days, there were almost no attacks in the early part of the stage, with the peloton keeping up a good tempo to discourage any breakaways. Phonak, Milaneza, Fassa Bortolo and CSC were the strongest teams, and took over the work from Lampre in the final 30 kilometres. On the Cat. 3 climb of Croisée Sierre, Euskaltel's Egoi Martinez took the points in front of Andrea Tonti (Saeco) and Rui Sousa (Milaneza), with the peloton following close behind. The bunch was back together again by the base of the descent, and CSC started to ride hard at the front to eliminate as many riders as possible before the final climb. Once the race reached Varen with 20 kilometres to go, Milaneza started to share the work with CSC. Through the hard work of these two teams, the peloton had been reduced to around 60 riders at the foot of the climb to Lèoche les Baines, and was further diminished on the lower slopes, with Dario Frigo (Fassa Bortolo) one of the first to be left behind. He was followed by race leader Simone Bertoletti, who couldn't hang on up the steep cobbles in Leuk Stadt, and said goodbye to his yellow jersey. In front, CSC's Manuel Calvente had been doing most of the damage until Milaneza duo David Bernabeu and Fabian Jeker powered off the front out of Leuk Stadt, with 15 km to go. The pair hoped for a repeat their victory in the final stage of Paris-Nice, with Bernabeu doing all the work to try and give Jeker a good launch pad for the finish. But behind them, Fassa Bortolo's Sven Montgomery worked hard to close the gap, with his new team leader Aitor Gonzalez on his wheel. Milaneza wasn't finished yet however, and as soon as Jeker and Bernabeu were caught, Txema del Olmo went on the offensive with 9 km to go. His attack was even shorter lived, but it caused a lot of damage in the bunch, which was now only 25 riders strong. As Del Olmo was caught at 8 km to go, his teammate Francisco Perez attacked and became the fourth Milaneza rider to lead the stage. Perez's attack was strong, and he opened up a dangerous 20 second gap to the chasing group, which blew apart when Fabian Jeker, Tyler Hamilton and Carlos Sastre (CSC), Alexandre Moos (Phonak), Yaroslav Popovych (Landbouwkrediet) and Laurent Dufaux (Alessio) extracted themselves from the bunch. Over the next few kilometres, Perez rode smoothly to maintain his 15-20 second lead on the six man chase group, which saw Hamilton and Sastre doing all the work. He reached the top of the climb with his lead intact, and had to negotiate a short descent with several sharp bends before he could claim victory. He took the first few bends very carefully, while behind him Moos and Dufaux, who knew the finish very well, tried to close the gap. Perez was almost at the bottom when he went off course, after being confused by the signals of the course marshals. He ended up on the team car deviation road, and rode for several hundred metres before he realised his error and threw his arms up in frustration. Behind him Alexandre Moos was making a bid to win the stage, leading out the uphill sprint from 300m with Dufaux, Jeker and Hamilton on his wheel. Dufaux passed his compatriot in the final 100m to win, with Jeker and Moos finishing just behind him in that order. Dufaux now has the lead in the race by 6 seconds over Alexandre Moos. Perez is in third at 14 seconds with Hamilton fourth at 15 seconds. Tomorrow from Monthey to Châtel-St-Denis/ Les Paccots will be a tough stage, containing three Cat. 1 climbs and a Cat. 2 climb to finish. PhotographyImages by Jeff Tse/www.jefftse.com/cycling
