96th Paris-Tours - CDMFrance, October 6, 2002Main Page Photography Results Espoirs Results World Cup Standings Piil wins first World Cup, Bettini extends series leadBy Chris Henry Sunday's 96th Paris-Tours carried a double bill as both a potentially decisive round in the World Cup competition and the final tune-up for next week's World Championships road race. The course's flat profile leads to yearly speculation of an inevitable bunch finish, but not since 1996 has the fall classic come down to a mass sprint. Today the trend continued, as Denmark's Jakob Piil (CSC-Tiscali) reached the line with former winner Jacky Durand after a day long escape. Piil put his track skills to good use, and executed a perfectly timed final surge to nip Durand at the line with the hungry peloton mere seconds behind. After only 5km of racing, the expected early break developed, featuring the eternal hopeful Jacky Durand (FDJeux.com), as well as Glenn d'Hollander (Lotto-Adecco), Francisco Mancebo (iBanesto.com), Samuel Dumoulin (Jean Delatour), and eventual winner Piil. The break, working well together before the expected chase began from behind, gained a maximum advantage of 9 minutes over the course of the first 175km. Durand and Piil kept the pressure on throughout the day, while the three remaining members of the escape began to tire, contributing less as the kilometers ticked by. Durand, as is typical, had thought of this sort of move before the start. He favored the chances of the early break given its composition. With d'Hollander along for the ride, Lotto wouldn't chase, and thus the other sprinters' teams might wait to begin their chase as well. Interestingly, Piil did have a teammate chasing from behind, as Olivier Asmaker worked with Jean Michel Tessier (Cofidis), and Sebastian Lang (Gerolsteiner) to try to bridge the gap to the five leaders. Although they held off the peloton for a reasonable distance, they were never able to join the front group. With 60km to race and a steady 3/4 tailwind helping them along, the leaders began to show real potential to stay away. By this point the peloton remained almost 7 minutes behind, with time running out for the increasingly urgent chase. Fassa Bortolo and Telekom provided the majority of the power in the pursuit, helped on occasion by the zebra stripes of Mario Cipollini's Acqua & Sapone team. As the finish neared, the break's early cooperative spirit faded, as d'Hollander decided to stop working. His fatigue was becoming evident nonetheless, prompting the stronger men Durand and Piil to take matters into their own hands. In due time, Mancebo was dropped on a small rise, while d'Hollander hung to the back of the break, which had a healthy advantage of 2'50" with only 25km to the finish. Fassa Bortolo continued to do the lion's share of the work in the peloton, which by this point had reclaimed the three man counter-attack lodged in no-man's land. By the 10km to go mark, Piil and Durand looked set to go the distance, while d'Hollander and Dumoulin had let a gap open to the lead duo which they couldn't close. At the top of the Cote de l'Epan, Piil let out a groan, his fatigue evident, and beckoned Durand to pull through. Durand, however, formerly initiated the tactical battle for the closing kilometers to come. "I knew (Piil) was stronger than me," Durand said after the race, "so my only chance was to wait and not pull through. He wasn't too happy that I wasn't riding." Piil kept an eye on Durand, but knowing both he and his companion were essentially at their limits, he pressed on to the finish to play his cards in a two-up sprint. "I would have liked the peloton to be a little closer," Durand continued, "because then he would have had to ride a little faster. He rode in front, but he was able to economize, and that's what limited my chances in the final sprint." Piil continued to pull along the 2km finishing straight of the Avenue de Grammont in Tours, but turned frequently, waiting for Durand to make his move. Durand launched the sprint, and for some distance looked as though he might just pull one over Piil, but he started his effort too soon. With only 30 meters to the line, Durand's legs said no more, as he sat back in the saddle, unable to carry on with an all out sprint. Piil summoned one more brief but decisive surge, and passed Durand to take his first World Cup win. The peloton was only seconds behind, having reeled in a late attack by Fassa Bortolo's Bartoli and Petacchi, who had also been joined by Johan Museeuw, in search of any advantage he could muster over World Cup leader Paolo Bettini. Erik Zabel took the field sprint for third place, while Bettini ultimately got the better of Museeuw in the bunch, and widened his lead in the series to 9 points with one race to go.
