Show of force: Armstrong flexes muscles on roller coaster prologue

"I always have a special motivation at the Tour de France; I always go 'au bloc' (all-out), declared a delighted Lance Armstrong to the TV cameras in almost fluent French after winning the Prologue Time Trial of the 2002 Tour de France, with a smooth segue from last July 29th, when the Texan won his 3rd consecutive Tour de France. "This was a special stage, incredible...the city is very beautiful, hilly, technical, with pavé...I think it was a good stage to win." And win he did, as Armstrong swept past the pretenders to his Tour de France throne in a dramatic demonstration of raw power and sheer fitness to take the first Maillot Jaune of the 2002 Tour de France.
Armstrong's family was on hand today to cheer him on, which was an extra motivation for him. "It was nice to warm up today with my wife and twins there and (son) Luke with a water bottle, playing with his toys...my family is the first thing in my life."
But Armstrong wasn't necessarily looking to win today. "When I got out there the course was dry and I felt incredibly good", he said. "It is a surprise and it is a good surprise. I'm happier than you think," Armstrong said in his post race press-good-feeling-conference.
Le Tour 2002 kicked off with a technical, spectacular 7km Prologue Time Trial parcours through the quaint environs of Luxembourg City, perhaps the most challenging Tour opener since the '99 Tour Prologue in Le Puy de Fou, France. With 27 turns overall, a tricky 80 km/h descent to Claus en, a tough climb back up the Rue de Prague over the Pont Adolph viaduct then a 1.5km false flat to the finish, the rider who took the first Maillot Jaune would have to be on great form.
The hostilities commenced Saturday at 4pm and with such a challenging course, the fastest time seemed to change constantly. Due to uncertain weather conditions, some fast riders were sent off early by their team managers just in case rain slowed the fastest riders later in the day.

George Hincapie (USPS) was the first under 9'30", with a solid 9'29.95", but when Inigo Cuesta (Cofidis) hammered home in 9'23" he knocked Andrea Peron (CSC-Tiscali) (who had posted a faster time than Hincapie) out of the lead. Just before 6pm, as the late afternoon sun broke out through the grey clouds over Luxembourg City, Brad McGee blasted down the ramp of the start house onto the parcours. His intermediate time was fastest at 4'03" and by the end of the tricky, tough 7km. tour, the Sydneysider had moved into the lead with a brilliant 9'21.69" (44.92 km/h avg). But there were still 71 riders left and with names like Millar, Moreau and Lance Armstrong still to ride, the Australian's hold on the Maillot Jaune was tenuous.
As it turned out, hunky Hungarian Laszlo Bodrogi (Mapei-Quick Step) didn't waste much time showing why he's one of the top testers in the world, as the 25 year old from Budapest just edged past McGee into first, with a 9'21.43" Bodrogi's time held for another half-hour, until the big guns began to fire. Santi Botero (Kelme-Costa Blanca) hammered home in 9'12.60", almost 10" ahead of Bodrogi and just ahead of Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano (ONCE-Eroski), who also was faster than the Hungarian.
Laurent Brochard (Jean Delatour) made a good run at Botero as did Frigo, but the man from Medellin maintained his lead until a surprising Raimondas Rumsas (Lampre-Daikin) powered past Botero with an excellent 9'11.97". The 30 year old Lithuanian, winner of the 2000 Giro di Lombardia and last year's Tour Of the Basque country was suddenly looking good. Heavy hitters like Verbrugghe, Leipheimer, Gontchar and Christophe Moreau threw it down at the Lampre man, but Rumsas kept his lead until a simply spectacular effort from Laurent Jalabert (CSC-Tiscali) just edged past Rumsas with 9'10.52" (45.57 km/h). The 33 year old Frenchman has always prepared well for the Tour and his excellent time showed his depth of experience and fitness.

Once again, the big guns roared but Jaja held his ground. Pre-race favourite David Millar came close to Jaja, but the biggest gun of all was yet to fire. As three time consecutive Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong started last, sporting the number 1 dossard, but not the Maillot Jaune. Instead, Armstrong was wearing his USPS skinsuit. "I was wearing it for two reasons; I like to ride in a (skinsuit) that is already broken in and I wore this one in the Midi-Libre and Dauphine'. The other is that I didn't want to wear it (maillot jaune) because you have a choice and I hadn't earned it yet."
Last to start at 7:08pm. Armstrong was quickly in contention, with 5th fastest intermediate time check after 3.5km on Rue Sosthene Weis. After hearing his split from Bruyneel, Armstrong proceeded to decimate the rest of the field on the last uphill half of the circuit. "After seeing the split times all day, we knew the race was going to be won or lost in the in the last kilometre," said Armstrong in the post-race press conference. "It was really hard. Personally I was cross-eyed."
Armstrong relegated Jaja to second with a tremendous time of 9.08.78" (45.92 km/h), taking his 2nd career Tour de France prologue win and 62nd overall pro victory.
Jaja will start Stage 1 with the Maillot Vert of TdF points leader, while Rumsas will certainly get a major morale boost towards his goal of a podium finish in Paris. Rounding out the top 10 were excellent rides from Brochard, Frigo, Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano and Joseba Beloki (ONCE-Eroski) in 9th, 13" behind Armstrong.

Prologue specialists Millar (5th) and Bodrogi (10th) simply didn't do as well as expected on the demanding course, while American contenders Tyler Hamilton (16th @ 16") and Levi Leipheimer (18th @16") had respectable performances. Losers of the day were Belgian Rik Verbrugghe (Lotto-Adecco), who blew a corner just after the intermediate time check and lost 10" to finish 24th at 19", and Christophe Moreau (Credit Agricole), last year's Prologue winner who could only manage 40th, 24" behind Armstrong.
The big question is will USPS defend Armstrong's Maillot Jaune on tomorrow's Stage 1, a loop through the hilly Luxembourg countryside? "We'll have a team meeting this evening with Johan and team and see what we're going to do. But I don't think so; we'll probably wait for the team time trial", said the happy, satisfied Armstrong.
