89th Tour de France - Grand TourFrance, July 6-28, 2002Stage profile Live report Results Previous Result Next Result Stage 12 - Friday July 19: Lannenezan - Plateau de Beille, 199.5 kmArmstrong and USPS crush the competition again
Jalabert takes Maillot Pois leadBy Tim Maloney, European editor in Plateau de Beille One day later and one day better, an exultant Lance Armstrong (USP) took his second straight stage win after 6 hours of racing today on Stage 12 in the 2002 Tour De France. It was the 14th stage win in Le Grand Boucle for the US Postal Service rider, demonstrating that the American is still unbeatable in the Tour De France. Even more than yesterday, today was a demonstration of the power of Armstrong and his strong USPS squad, with the Maillot Jaune more than doubling his overnight GC margin on second placed Joseba Beloki (ONCE) from 1'12" to 2'28", and putting time into all his competitors. "Once again today, the team was great. We were all together today at the foot of the Plateau de Beille. I knew the climb very well since it's only a couple of hours from my place in Girona," said the satisfied Armstrong in a post-race press conference. "But the Tour isn't finished. There are still a lot of mountain stages, like Ventoux, les Deux Alpes, and I could have a bad day or a crash," declared the realistic Armstrong. The Maillot Jaune continued regarding Sunday's tough stage to Mont Ventoux that "I've said many times that is the hardest climb we'll do this year. It may not necessarily be the hardest stage because there's no other climbs of the day. It in of itself is very difficult I hope to be in the front. I don't know that I can win but if I'm in a position to win I won't make the same mistake as two years ago." Joseba Beloki seemed a bit stunned after Stage 12, explaining that "it was a quite complicated stage today. But there is still a lot of racing and the Alps are ahead of us." "Yes, Armstrong has showed that he is very strong but we (ONCE) have improved as well. The Alps are going to be different, the Mont Ventoux stage is long and it's going to be very hard so we'll have to see what happens there." Armstrong's USPS teammate Roberto Heras was second on the stage and his back to back stage podiums have propelled the diminutive Spanish climber into seventh on GC, 8'01" behind Armstrong. Laurent Jalabert (CST) took the lead in the Maillot Pois best climber competition after another audacious, taxing day with over 140km in a break. "I'm very satisfied with my result today," said the newly polka-dot clad Jaja after the stage. "My goal today was to get in the first break to get the KOM points and I took the lead on the first col. It was a really a nice day, since this is the last time I'll race in the Pyrenees," explained Jalabert, who will retire after this season.
How it unfoldedOn another beautiful summer morning in the village of Lannemezan, located in the Pyrenees Piedmont region, 176 riders started the stage at a modest tempo until the first sprint in Loures-Barousse, where Robbie McEwen took the points from Zabel. Christophe Oriol (A2R) continued his move from a absorbed break after this sprint, but at the foot of the steep Cat. 1 Col de Menté, Laurent Jalabert (CST) took off after Oriol. The CSC-Tiscali rider was looking for additional mountain points and was only 34" behind the AG2R rider at the summit, taking second place KOM points behind leader Oriol and capturing the lead in the chase for the Maillot Pois from Halgand (DEL). Behind Jaja, several groups were trying to get across, with chasers like old pro Laurent Dufaux (ALS), young gun Isidro Nozal (ONE), opportunistic Richard Virenque (DFF), Russian climber Bobo Botcharov (A2R), Eddy Mazzoleni (TAC), Miguel Martinez (MAP), Beat Zberg (RAB), and David Etxebarria (EUS). On the Col de Portet d'Aspet, perhaps inspired by his lead in the Maillot Pois competition, like yesterday, Jaja passed Oriol and was first over the top of the short, steep climb where Fabio Casartelli's memorial greeted the riders. Seven years ago yesterday, the 1992 Olympic Champion was killed in a tragic crash on the descent of the Portet d'Aspet. Today the man from Mazamet had company on his long break; Jaja was joined by strong riders like Dufaux and ONCE-Eroski's Nozal, who didn't work in the break. As the seemingly tireless Frenchman and his ex-team mate Dufaux with shadow Nozal powered away up the Cat. 1 Col de la Core, the chasing group of 7 was 2'00" behind and the USPS led peloton at 4'10" with 92km to go. Halfway up the 14.3km climb, Frenchman Christophe Moreau and Spaniard Carlos Sastre seemed about to come to blows as a shoving match carried the riders back and forth across the road. The front trio crested the summit 2'45" ahead of the remains of the rest of the break, with only Dufaux sharing the pace. Behind, Virenque was desperately trying to bridge up, with only Botcharov and Mazzoleni able to stay with him. The rest were dropped, with Oriol, Etxebarria and co absorbed by the USPS led peloton 4'00 behind. Down the descent to Oust, a charming village in the Ariege region, Jaja & Co continued to pull away from the now four chasers, as Little Mig Martinez had used his mountain bike descending skills to come back with 78 km left to race. The gap was now 3'15" between the first two groups, with the USPS led peloton at 4'30". All nine of the USPS riders were powering away on the front, as Floyd Landis was having a much better day today than yesterday. Virenque was getting antsy as the gap to the break wasn't coming down and started yelling at the other riders to work harder. Mazzoleni got fed up with Virenque's big mouth and took off alone. This move broke the rhythm of the chase and with the relentless chase by USPS coming up from behind, Virenque, Botcharov and Martinez were doomed and absorbed by the peloton with 62 km to go. As the afternoon got longer, the humid heat in the Ariege valleys increased and approaching Massat, at the foot of the penultimate climb, the Cat. 2 Col de Port with 58 km to go, Jaja & Co were still on the move, with 4'10 on solo chaser Eddy Mazzoleni and 4'40" on the peloton. But Mazzoleni knew he wasn't going to last long in no-man's land and sat up. Oscar Lapize was the first TDF rider over the Col de Port 92 years ago, which marks the watershed between the western and eastern Pyrenees. Nozal was clearly suffering up front, as the highly experienced Jaja and Dufaux maintained their solid pace. Many riders were sporting the new style in cycling caps today, adorned with multiple slits and big holes chopped in them for that extra cooling action. USPS kept delivering their solid tempo the front, followed up the Col de Port by Beloki (ONE), Rumsas (LAM), Moreau, Basso (FAS) and Botero (KEL). At the summit of the Cat 2 ascent with 44 km to go, Jalabert took KOM points yet again, with Virenque taking the KOM sprint for 4th, 4'39" behind. The break was right on a 34 km/h average pace, but without a bigger lead and the fast 10km flat stretch between Tarascon sur Ariege and the base of the final climb up Plateau de Beille at Les Cabannes, the lead trio would only hit the base of the final ascent with a 4'00 lead - probably not enough to stay away. Domo's attack over the top of the Col de Port looked like it was simply designed to get points for Virenque, but with Merckx and Konecny, it looked like they DFF boys were trying to get Virenque in a position to attack for a stage win. But Jaja's team-mate Andrea Peron had come along to mark Virenque, and the perennially powerful Italian was going to spoil the party for the Domo move. Indeed, the USPS mailmen went into special delivery mode on the final flat section and sucked up the Domo move, powering along the Ariege valley on the wide, fast N20 highway. At Les Cabannes, 1 km before the base of the hors categorie Plateau de Beille, Jaja & Co. were doomed with only a 2'45" lead on the 70 strong peloton. Jaja's legs were finally feeling the effects his 220km off the front over the last two stages. Floyd Landis hit the bottom of the Plateau de Beille climb riding hard tempo with the rest of USPS. Beloki and Rumsas had moved up, but the first attack came from Wladimir Belli (FAS). The Italian's move upped the pace from Landis, who closed the gap down, but then ONCE made the next move. Marcus Serrano jumped up the road, but USPS matched the move as Chechu Rubiera upped the tempo and brought back the ONCE rider. Two minutes up the road, Jaja made his move for victory as once again while the infernal pace by USPS blew rider after rider out the back. Frigo, Julich, Virenque all went backwards, as did Maillot Blanc Ivan Basso, who's teammate Belli dropped back to pace the young Italian star up the tough climb. Americans Hamilton and Leipheimer were the next to go out the back along with Axel Merckx. Up front, Jaja's lead kept dropping; a hopeless 1'30" with 12km to ride, while 14 riders were left in the front group; Armstrong, Rubiera, Heras (USPS), Beloki, Serrano, Azevedo, Gonzalez de Galdeano (ONE), Botero and Sevilla (KEL), Mancebo and Osa (BAN), Kivilev (COF), Sastre (CST) and Goubert (DEL). With 10km, after 142km away, Jalabert was finished. What an incredible display of guts by the man from Mazemet, who ended up with the Maillot Pois today in his final Tour De France. Sevilla and Osa had come off as Rubiera was just murdering everybody with his terrible tempo. Kivilev, Goubert and Serrano were the next to go as Chechu took his last shots, Heras went to the front with 5 km to go and upped the tempo once again. Just like yesterday at La Mongie, this was the move that made the difference, as only Beloki could follow the USPS move. But today on Plateau de Beille, Armstrong had better legs than yesterday and decided to school Beloki. Under a hot late afternoon summer sun, with the rocky crags of the Pyrenees in the background, the Maillot Jaune attacked hard, gapping Beloki and Heras, who just sat on Beloki until Lance had 20". Heras made his move up to try and get up to Lance, but perhaps under team orders over the race radio, or perhaps finding that his attack took too much energy, the Spaniard slowed and Beloki re-joined him with 3 km to go. Armstrong continued to take time out of Beloki, while Botero and Gonzalez de Galdeano came back strongly in the last part of the climb. The first five places on GC remained the same, except that Armstrong took time out of everybody. Heras rode into the top ten, while Oscar Sevilla improved from 13th to 9th, while Levi Leipheimer (RAB) made came up two more places on GC to 12th. Tyler Hamilton had a terrible day today; the man from Marblehead found that Friday was a classic "le jour sans", finishing 38th, 8'06" behind Armstrong and dropped to 22nd on GC.
