Ever since they lost the first stage to Mapei by under 2 seconds, Fassa Bortolo has dominated the Settimana Ciclistica Internazionale Coppi-Bartali. Alessandro Petacchi's three stage wins were followed by Francesco Casagrande's third place in today's tough fourth stage, handing him the overall leader's jersey. The stage was won by Mobilvetta's Ruggero Marzoli, who beat Giuliano Figueras and Casagrande by six seconds.

"I was just going for the win, without having to worry about the general classification after I missed the cut yesterday," said Marzoli. "I was already riding strongly in Pantalica and was also at the front in San Remo. I dedicate the victory to the team, to my parents, to my friend Carlo, my girlfriend Veronica and all those who have believed in me."

The last circuit in today's stage contained quite a number of climbs, and the final selection comprised a group of approximately 20 riders who were chasing Luca Scinto (Mapei) and last year's winner Ruslan Ivanov (Alessio). Ivanov survived until 2.5 kilometres to go when Marzoli launched his winning attack. Casagrande and Figueras set off after him but could not catch him before the finish. Close behind Casagrande was Mapei's Cadel Evans who led home a small group of riders for fourth place.

Tomorrow's final stage from Casalguidi to Pistoia (153 km) will not be an easy run, although Casagrande and his team should have no problems in maintaining his lead.
