Petacchi continues winning streak

The second stage of the Settimana Coppi-Bartali has ended in another sprint victory to Fassa Bortolo's Alessandro Petacchi. The 28 year old has been on fire so far this season, winning eight races already. Today he beat home Daniele Bennati (Acqua e Sapone) and Jan Bratkowski (Cage Maglierie), therefore maintaining the leader's jersey that he won yesterday.

The windy 197 kilometre stage from Riccione to Faenza saw a group of 35 riders escape, with a strong representation from Fassa Bortolo. Roberto Petito gave Petacchi the final leadout, who obliged by starting his sprint with 250 metres to go. Although a little early, Petacchi kicked again at 150 to go to win the stage.

"These last two victories have certainly shown me my mistake last week leading up to San Remo," he said. "I was tired already after 100 kilometres, a sign of overtraining. I did too much, riding 230 kilometres on a day that I should have rested...The next day I raced, I lacked the explosiveness."

Petacchi was very happy with his team, congratulating them before outlining his future plans. These include the Driedaagse Van De Panne, Ronde Van Vlaanderen, Gent-Wevelgem and of course the Giro d'Italia.
