Welcome to Cyclingnews' live coverage of the 14th stage of the Giro d'Italia. Today's stage is the first "long" time trial of the Giro, 30.3 kilometres starting and finishing in Numana. It's also the last stage before the second rest day on Monday, so the main contenders will be going all out today.
The parcours is not easy, starting with a steady climb up to 259m for the first 9 km. Then it drops down before another really steep (16%) hill at km 12.2. After that, it's undulating all the way to the finish.

There was one non-starter today: Massimo Codol (Lampre) who crashed quite heavily yesterday and looked to be in a lot of pain, although he did finish the stage.
The best time so far today has been Landbouwkrediet's time trialist Marc Streel, who clocked 43'43 for the 30.3 kilometres, which is an indication of how slow this course is, as that's only an average of 41.58 km/h.

The top 3 are still Marc Streel, Denis Bondarenko and Raphael Schweda, as Gabriele Missaglia (Lampre) and Mikhail Khalilov (Selle Italia) clock 44'52 and 45'14 respectively to move into 6th and 7th.

A new top time has been set by CSC-Tiscali's Andrea Peron. He knocked 41 seconds off Marc Streel's time to clock 43'02 (42.25 km/h). Also, Davide Bramati (Mapei) rode 44'05 to move into fourth place.
Peron would have been testing out the course for his teammate Tyler Hamilton, who struggled a little yesterday but is expected to perform better today.

Prologue winner Juan Carlos Dominguez (Phonak) is definitely not going all out today. With a time of around 48'30, he is well off the pace.
Dario Cioni (Mapei) has just started his ride.

Vladimir Duma (Panaria) is well on his way, and is on his way to a good time.
Igor Astarloa (Saeco) finishes with 45'06. Andrei Mizourov (Mercatone Uno) is better, with 43'56, which will put him in the top 5.

Vladimir Duma is the new leader, with a the first sub-43 minute time. He crossed in 42'55 (42.36 km/h), which was 7 seconds better than Andrea Peron.
Ivan Gotti (Alessio) is now starting as Mariano Piccoli (Lampre) finishes with 43'15, third overall.

Both David Cioni and Serguei Gontchar are setting good times at the intermediate checks, with Gontchar the best at the KOM with 14'22.

A nice ride by Cioni, who was also very much in the action during stage 13. He crosses the line in 42'23, the new best time.
Serguei Gontchar catches Joaquim Castelblanco with around 10 km to go, and he looks like he'll beat Cioni's time.

Rik Verbrugghe, one of the favourites for today's stage, has just started.
Castelblanco picks up his speed and uses Gontchar as a pace maker, although he is not drafting him.

Rabobank's Grischa Niermann crosses in 43'35, which will put him 5th on the provisional standings at the moment.
Tyler Hamilton (CSC) has just started his ride, followed by Franco Pellizzotti (Alessio) (he of the long hair).
Gontchar finishes in 41'52, easily the best time, nearly 30 seconds quicker than Cioni.

Paolo Savoldelli (Index-Alexia), another handy time trialist, sets off for his 30 kilometres. Verbrugghe is through the KOM in 14'48, 26 seconds slower than Gontchar.
Andrea Noe' crossed the KOM in second place behind Gontchar.

Tyler Hamilton is the best at the KOM with 14'09 - that's 13 seconds quicker than Gontchar. That's an excellent start for the CSC rider, who is a specialist in the time trials.

A headband and green jersey wearing Francesco Casagrande starts his race of truth. He will be followed by Jens Heppner, the maglia rosa.

Oscar Pereira Sio (Phonak) now has the third best time with 42'47. At the moment, it looks like Hamilton is the favourite to win this stage, as Frigo comes through the KOM in 14'37, 28 seconds behind Hamilton.
Evans is quite close to Frigo on the KOM.

Pietro Caucchioli (Alessio) is having a good ride too, clocking 14'31 at the KOM for 3rd best time so far. Hamilton is 16 seconds quicker than Gontchar at the Intergiro.

Heppner loses a lot of time on the KOM, crossing in 15'29 (about 1'15 slower than Hamilton).

Hamilton smashes Gontchar's time and finishes in 41'21, surely good enough to win this stage.
Evans and Frigo are running in about 3rd and 4th at the moment, but very close to each other.
Franco Pellizzotti's time is not too bad, 43'14, but it won't get him into the top 10.

Casagrande's time at the second check is 1'26 slower than Hamilton, so there will be some interesting changes to the GC today.
Savoldelli's time is 42'57, 11th best time.

Dario Frigo (Tacconi) has a good ride, to finish with 42'20, 5th best and it may be enough to put him near the maglia rosa.
Heppner has lost 2'06 to Hamilton at the second check.
Evans is better than Frigo over the last part of the course, clocking 42'02 - 3rd best so far.

It's Casagrande versus Heppner now, and the gap between the two is around 50 seconds, meaning that Heppner should hang on to the pink - just. But watch out for Evans, who is the best of the top 5 GC riders. Although Hamilton will certainly move up a lot, so will Evans.
Casagrande's time is over 43 minutes - 43'12 (18th place). He has lost 1'51 to Hamilton, meaning that Hamilton is now 1" ahead of Casagrande on GC. Will we see Heppner first and Evans second?

Jens Heppner finishes his ride, another solid performance from the maglia rosa. He has not given up any more than he has to, and finishes with 43'53. He will keep the jersey!
