Cadel Evans' Giro d'Italia Diary 2002Finale: Pink ribbon and balloons for CadelJune 2, 2002Cyclingnews caught up with Cadel shortly after the finish of stage 20, where he placed 35th in the bunch sprint and confirmed his 14th place on GC. There was a nice surprise waiting for him back at the Mapei centre too. CN: How are you feeling? CE: Well I finished the race as I've finished many 100's of races. I had a nice surprise when I went back to the Mapei centre to pick up my car - it was wrapped in pink ribbon and balloons! Everyone was very happy for me. We're going out for a pizza now. CN: So are you and the Mapei team happy with your first Giro? CE: I'd say so yeah. I think Miguel Indurain rode the Tour de France for five years before he won it. I had 17 days [before taking the maglia rosa]. I had a steep learning curve! Overall it was a great experience. I learned a lot about myself, people and racing. CN: How was the time trial? CE: I was happy after the things that went on for me in Folgaria. I really wanted to take it easy after those two mountain stages. I didn't want to push anything. The team was concerned with my health. I was actually surprised with my result [11th @ 3'23]. CN: How about the outcome of the Giro? CE: I actually thought it would have been closer and more dramatic. Hamilton, Frigo, and myself - we really pushed ourselves the day before [stage 16] and that showed on stage 17. CN: What was it like to wear the maglia rosa? CE: It got a bit heavy in the end there. But it was great, fantastic. For me the greatest emotions came from the feelings in the team. From one extreme to the other to the other. It was a great emotional experience to be involved in the team. Pulling through when it's tough it was probably the highlight of it. CN: In a normally Italian dominated race, there was also a lot of Australian interest too... CE: Some of the support and letters posted on my website [www.cadelevans.com]...That was fantastic! CN: Your plans now? CE: I'm actually going to take a few days off with my family [mum and gran] in Switzerland. They can see what my life's all about. I'll take it easy. My next objective is the Commonwealth Games at the end of July. |
