"If I told you back in January that I'd take over the Maglia Rosa, what would you have said to me?", a surprised and delighted Cadel Evans asked Cyclingnews from his hotel in Corvara in Badia. As we were just dumbstruck, we moved on to ask Cadel about the letter he received from Australian Prime Minister John Howard this morning before Stage 16.

"It was really nice to get this; he said that everyone in Australia was watching me and that felt good. But it didn't help me too much in the race! Today was very hard - for everyone. (Dario) Frigo was very, very strong and Hamilton was having a hard day but came good. On the Pordoi, there were a few points where I was having problems but so was everyone else. So it turned out good in the end and I have the Maglia Rosa."

Tomorrow (Stage 17/Corvara in Badia-Folgaria/222km) will be another hard day; it could be really dangerous with Hamilton and Frigo, who seems to be riding better. Cyclingnews asked Cadel if he would use his new Maglia Rosa as his pyjamas tonight but the Melbourne man laughed that "I don't think so; I'll just keep it in my room."
