Komen Central Georgia Cycle for the Cure Race

Macon, GA, April 19, 2005

Over 40 women lined up to participate in the first ever downtown criterium challenge held in conjunction with Stage 1 of 2005 Dodge Tour de Georgia. The women raced around a wide, retangular 1 mile downtown course which later become the finish for the Pro men's Stage 1 from Augusta to Macon for a blazing 45 minutes plus 5 laps with over $1700 in cash prizes.

Several local favorite Southeastern regional teams graced the starting line, including Forum Cycling, Travelgirl, Team Fuji, Defeet, Aaron Rents, Max Cycling and a suprise guest appearance from Canada's Lynn Bessette. The field split apart pretty quickly, with several attacks lead by Defeet and Travelgirl.

However, all eyes were on Bessette, as she counter attacked in an effort to shake major sprinter's Shannon Hutchison of Aaron Rents and Iona Wynter of Forum Cycling. Only Jen Cooper Green of Travelgirl was able to catapult into the lead pack in response to Bessette's unrelenting pace. Travelgirl's blocking efforts paid off and Jen Cooper Green ousted Bessette for the win, while Hutchison crossed the line in third place.

Tracy Hambrick of GTC Cycling and Ana Johnson of Macon, Georgia placed first, and second place respectively in the women's Category IV race.
