Bryan Park Cycling Series

September 14, 2004

John (Big Daddy) Schindler spanked the rest of the combined field to win the final Bryan Park Cycling Series this evening.

For Schindler the joy of hearing cries began last Saturday night at 10:12 p.m. That's when Schindler successfully recruited Richmond Ciclismo's newest member to its junior program, Alden Paul Schindler, at 8 pounds and 2 ounces.

Congratulations to John and Koren Schindler.

Schindler patiently waited as the rest of the peloton chased Team Cobblestone's Bill Malone's solo surge to the front with three laps to go. The pack soon caught Malone at the bell lap. The race ended in a field sprint.

Old Testament style rains canceled the races these past two weeks. This week's hurricane, Ivan, will arrive too late though some of his gloomy clouds hovered above.

Schindler patiently waited as the rest of the peloton chased Team Cobblestone's Bill Malone's solo surge to the front with three laps to go. The pack soon caught Malone at the bell lap. The race ended in a field sprint.

Tim Mullins placed second. Cobblestone's Dan King and Chip Gobles placed third and fourth. The race's two primes were sponsored by Legend's Hair Salon and Palani Drive Restaurant.

For many of the local bicycle racers, the 2004 road bike season ended with the 2004 Virginia (district 42) Conte's / Cycor state time-trial in Stoney Creek, Va.

Schindler's fourth place in the time-trial helped him win the District 42 elite category omnium. An omnium combines the best results of the district road race, criterium and time-trial.

Glen Allen's Rob Suydam, who rides for Virginia Beach Velo / East Coast Bicycles, won the overall points for the district's elite level BAR (Best All around Rider). The BAR combines the results from all of the district's races.

Other local elite BAR riders include: seventh place Schindler, 10th place Jon Wirsing of Team Snow Valley, and 12^th place Leigh Carter of SP Imports / Palani Drive.

Suydam placed second in the state time-trial. He blazed the 40 kilometer (a little less than 25 miles) in 54 minutes and 32 seconds.

Most racers dream to have the cycling accomplishments of Dennis Rainear of Contes / Cycor. He hoped for more.

"My season was not ideal but I was very pleased to have won the state road race and the state time-trial championships (for the 50-54-year-olds)," said Rainear. His said he was disappointed with the fourth place in the state criterium. He won the state time-trial with a time of 56 minutes and 18 seconds. Only one other rider, racing the 30+ age groups, had a faster time.

SP Imports / Palani Drive's John McGarva won the men's category 3 state time-trial with a time of 56 minutes and 3 seconds.

Richmond Ciclismo's Jon Gaudio ended the season in second place on the men's category 3 BAR.

Team Cobblestone ended the season with the districts most solid men's BAR category 4 riders. Cobblestone's J.H. Revere placed second in the category 4 state time-trial with a time of 58 minutes and 38 seconds. He finished the season second on category 4 BAR.

It's still September 2004, right? Now, all the teams are talking about 2005. Cyclists riding this weekend's Maryland and North Carolina races only mentioned them because they couldn't make Sunday's preseason rides.

All the teams agree that it's nice to smoke another local team, but all the teams want to improve their performances against the northern Virginia teams and, especially, against the Tidewater teams. The Tidewater area teams had the depth in all the categories to distance themselves in the BAR races.

Tidewater schedules more races than the rest of Virginia. Team Cobblestone's Ashland criterium and road race might be a model for future local races.

All the local teams say they want to develop junior cyclists. Stratton Delany will head the Richmond Ciclismo junior development program.

"I'm trying to work out plans for a junior level training race series," Delany said. "The only way any level of racers will improve is through experience."

"Our team did very well this year growing our ranks and increasing the experience level of many new riders," said Rainear.

"I thought we had a large turnout for the women in the time-trial. We have had a huge number of women join our team this summer," added Kristin Andrs also of Conte's / Cycor. "I think we averaged about one new person per week."

Andrs said the Conte's / Cycor women's program success is largely due to the clinics and mentor programs the team has worked on.
