2004 Anniversary Inn Cache Classic Stage Race
Logan, Utah, September 2-6, 2004

The Cache Classic Stage Race is quickly becoming one of the great races in the Intermountain West. Riders from all around the west made the trip to this years Cache Classic, which is becoming a Must Do on the race calender. 5 races in 4 days challenge the riders in the beautiful Cache Valley of Northern Utah. Broadmark, GlobalPhoneSales presented by Healthy Choice, Porcupine/Contender Bicycles and Ogden One all brought strong teams to battle it out with a very tough contingent of solo riders and smaller teams from around the west in this year's edition.
Fazoli's Prologue
Jesse Westergard (Global Phone Sales) bested the field by posting an impressive 2:14 up the .9 mile course that weaved through Utah State University and starts with a .5 mile 7% climb.
Xtreme Energy Gel Little Mountain Road Race
Cool temperatures and a dusting of snow on the top of the highest mountains greeted the racers as they prepared to tackle 4 laps of the Little Mountain Course for a total of 64 miles. The course consisted of 3 climbs per lap with the toughest being 1 mile in length with the steepest pitch at 10%. Before most riders had a chance to clip into their pedals, four riders were up the road. Strongman Calvin Allan (Broadmark), newly crowned Masters National Time Trial Champion Sandy Perrins (Global Phone Sales) and Utah waif Alex Rock (Porcupine) worked together to stay away. With most of the teams up the road, the pack settled in a saw the lead grow to a max of 2'40" with under 25 miles to go. After the third time up the major climb, a coalition of solo riders and the smaller teams worked together to bring the break back. The last time up the big climb the break was in site and by the top things were all back together. With less than 10 miles to go the attacks started with the most promising being a huge attack by Burke Swindlehurst (Navigators). Swindlhurst got a 15 second gap and it stayed there for 5K, but with only 3K to go the field was back together for a field sprint to the finish. Ryan Barrett made it two wins in two days for the Global Phone Sales team. And with the 15 second time bonus, Barrett leapfrogged teammate Jesse Westergard to take the leaders jersey. Colorado legend Mark Southard finish a strong 2nd to get the 10 second time bonus.
USU Community Credit Union Downtown Criterium
Just hours after the finish of the Little Mountain Road Race, the riders lined up for the evening criterium located on a technical 6 corner course which featured a hill located just past the start finish line. The race was fast and furious with constant attacks from the moment the gun went off. Nothing got more than a few seconds up the road until a break of three which included Todd Hageman (Cole Sport), Kirk Eck (Global Phone Sales) and Evan Hepner (Canyon Elite) got a 25 second gap. But with only one of the major teams represented in the break it was doomed. With less than 10 laps to go, Burke Swindlhurst (Navigators) attacked after the hill with Allan Butler (Global Phone Sales) and were quickly joined by Mark Southard (Excel), Troy Critchlow (Broadmark), John Osguthorpe (Ogden One), and Matt Weyen (Iomega). With most of the strong teams represented and a very fit and determined Burke Swindlhurst driving the break, what was left of the field were hoping just to minimize their loses. Southard easily won the sprint and with his 2nd place in the morning he was the new race leader.
Blue Water Resort Weston Canyon Road Race
With only 1 minute separating the top 30, riders were looking to make their mark and separate themselves from the field. First off early were early race leader Ryan Barrett and Utah waif Alex Rock. By the top of the Weston Canyon Climb (8 mile climb with grades averaging 5% and sections up to 10%), the pair had over 2 minutes. But by the time the field hit the dirt road up to the top of Devils Creek Resevoir Dam (1 mile @ 8%) the break was back in the fold. Constant attacks followed as the cross winds picked up, but nothing could stick with the aggressive field. 17K from the finish, Eric Flynn (Porcupine/Contender) but in a prefectly timed attack during a lull in the race. Eric was eventually joined by Jesse Westergard. Soon after, a flying Burke Swindlhurst attacked the field and quickly joined the duo to make it a trio. The exhausted field battered by the cross winds could only watch as the trio gained a 40 second advantage. Westergard could not keep up the pace and fell back. With their GC hopeful dropped from the break, Global Phone Sales got to the front to try and bring the break back, but it ended up being too little too late. Swindlhurst attacked Flynn with 5K to go and crossed the line solo. Flynn finished a valiant 2nd with Evan Hepner winning the field sprint for 3rd.
Weathershield Benson Marina Individual Time Trial
Top 3 places were very much still up for grabs going into the final time trial. A flat to slightly rolling 12 mile time trial would shake up the final GC with such small time differences separating the Top 25 riders. Only 90 seconds separated 1st and 25th .
Matt Weyen smoked the course and most of the competition. Stating he was in his 11 most of the race, when most had to keep it in the 14-15, he was the strongest on this day.
Finishing a strong 5th place only 25 seconds back of Weyen, Burke Swindlhurst won this years Cache Classic Stage Race.
