Local rider, Jon Wirsing, for Annapolis, Md. based Team Snow Valley beat some tag-team tactics to win Tuesday's Bryan Park Cycling Series. Wirsing, who is one of the country's top amateur cyclists and who is captain of one of the country's top teams, had to fend off repeated breakaway attempts with two laps to go.

With 14 laps to go, Richmond Ciclismo's John Schindler and Wirsing bolted away from the pack. Soon, Three Sports' Jimmy McMillan, Ciclismo's Matt Forbes, SP Imports/Palani Drive's Sean Tunstall, and Cobblestone's Joel Street caught up to the two-man break.

With all the local teams represented, except Conte's/Cycor, it should have been a safe bet that this breakaway would work. Sensing an "Uh, oh," many of the independent riders and Conte's/Cycor charged after the break.

Meanwhile, back in the breakaway, Street dropped from the lead six. With six laps to go, the pack swallowed him. His Cobblestone team hammered to the front.

"Joel was in the break for a while but when he came back to the pack, we all worked together," said Chip Gobles of Cobblestone. "There were a lot of people pulling. It was awesome."

"Overall, of course, the break just wasn't going fast enough and we knew we were going to get caught," Wirsng said. "I wasn't going to pull any harder than anyone else. I tried to encourage them, you know, 'C'mon guys keep it going', but there's only so much you can do."

With two laps to go, the breakaway ended.

Last week's winner, in similar circumstances, Stephen Selby bolted away to the front. Wirsing chased and caught Selby, only to have Forbes bolt past. Wirsing chased and caught him. Then Conte's/Cycor Mark Plourde bolted past with one lap to go. Wirsing had to think with Schindler on his wheel.

"When Mark was away, Mark made a good move. I wanted to tell the Ciclismo guys ‘okay the ball is in your court. I can either jump to him on the finish or you can chase him down now and go for the win. It's up to you," Wirsing said. "This is Ciclismo's course. I had to make them do a little bit of work."

Schindler chased and caught Plourde. After the final turn, Wirsing took the lead and sprinted to the win.

Cobblestone's Bill Malone place second. Schindler took third.

Second place finisher of the B-race, Andrew Wolak of Three Sports, placed fourth. He beat tonight's B-race champ, Dan King of Cobblestone. King placed fifth.

Looking at the finishing order of the A-race shows the quality of the B-race. In the past, many of the category 4 riders, who are eligible to ride both races, use the A-race for experience. In the A-race, riders corner faster and ride smoother. It's much faster but it's much safer.

With three laps to go, the B-race had the look of a typical B-race pack finish. Cobblestone had its riders up front and Richmond Ciclismo's Joe Notoricola tried to rally the team for a lead-out. Wolak stayed close to the front.

At the finish, King sprinted out of the pack to edge Wolak for the win. Chip Gobles of Cobblestone placed third. Mark Connelly placed fourth. John Messersmith, also of Cobblestone, placed fifth.

Legends Hair Salon, Rowletts Bicycles, John Schindler, and Elvin Jefferson awarded the race's prime laps. Primes (preems) are bonus sprints held throughout the race.

This Saturday, area cyclists will compete in the 8th annual Amphibious Assault Criterium. This is the official District 42 (Virginia and Washington D.C.) criterium championship.
