Fly V celebrates with another great Day

Ben Day (Fly V Australia/Successful Living) continued a successful month of racing by winning the Redlands Bicycle Classic Sun Prologue. Day soared up the five kilometre hill top time trial with a time of 9:19, besting second placed Brent Bookwalter (BMC) by three-seconds and third placed Tom Zirbel (Bissell) by six-seconds.
"I went into the Tour of California not going so well and came out a lot better, with a platform to work off of," said Day. "I've trained really hard since then and I've capitalized off that -- I'm feeling really good and fresh."
Day arrived in Redlands fresh off of an overall victory at the San Dimas Stage Race held last weekend. His prologue stage win at San Dimas helped setup his overall win.
Day was a strong contender at last year's Redlands, a crash on the final stage forced him out of a sixth place position. "The first few races have worked out really well for me and my training has been going great," he continued. "I took a bit of a break after San Dimas but my motor is still going strong. I've been in Boulder training and my numbers are going very well. Training is so scientific these days that you kind of know, more or less, where you're at.
The competition is fierce at this year's event with some 200 contenders rolling down the starting ramp, separated by 30-seconds.

The course started on a false flat that gradually increased until the last kilometre presented a steep incline. Riders needed to decide whether a time trial bike or a road bike would get them to the top of Panorama Point the fastest.
"I've done this course twice before and it's a great one," Bookwalter said. "It's not just a hard physical question. It's a very tactical time trial and you have to gage the equipment used and where you exert your efforts. We are ready and due for a good race here at Redlands."
Team Bissell also place two riders within the top 10. American time trial talent Zirbel was one of the event favorites and expected to land a podium position. The Boulder native is has quickly become a rising star on the National Racing Calendar time trial scene after his notable second place in the US time trial championships held last September and the Tour of San Luis in Argentina in January. Zirbel went on the place a respectable seventh place at the Tour of California in February.
"The team was doing a good job of keeping me updated on the previous times but this time trial is so short that you don't really need time checks along the way," said Zirbel, regarding the officials decision to not allow team follow cars behind the riders. "You just have to go as hard as you can for ten minutes - pretty simple."
Neben too good for Columbia

Amber Neben (Nurnberger-Shoair) brought a World Time Trial Champion performance to Redlands Bicycle Classic to match her International Cycling Union rainbow jersey, claiming the race's prologue victory. Neben clocked a 10:40, nearly 30 seconds ahead of Columbia-HighRoad teammates Mara Abbott and Ina-Yoko Teutenberg who placed second and third respectively.
"This is the first time in the 2009 season that I've been able to wear my rainbow skinsuit," said Neben, who opted to compete in her home country event over the coinciding UCI Women's World Cup held in Cittiglio, Italy this weekend. "It feels really good to wear it and it's an honor to be the World Champion. I put it on and everyone else sees me different, even though I feel like I'm the same person. I know what this jersey means and when I put it on I feel like I have a little bit extra because of it."
Neben used her time from last year's event in Redlands to gauge her performance throughout the stage. Team cars were not allowed to follow behind the riders for this year's race.
"I had different points marked on the course and I knew that if I hit those points about the same time as last time then I was okay," she said. "But until you finish you usually don't know. It's such a hard effort and I was tied up a little bit at the top of the hill.
"I hoped that I didn't go too hard on the bottom portion," said Neben. "I was focused on the whole thing and not just fixated on one point."

The Redlands Bicycle Classic marks the second event on the North American Racing Calendar as well as the first of four events that comprise the Women's Prestige Cycling Series. This year's event hosts the highest number of entrants at more than 150 contenders.
Abbott, last year's prologue winner, noted the various aspects of the course that made for a challenging event. "I found it interesting because Ina and I ended up with basically exactly the same time and in general we are not super similar riders," Abbott said. "That speaks to how versatile it was and that it really had a little bit of everything which made it fun."
The Boulder native is in her second season racing for Columbia-HighRoad after a successful 2008 introduction to international racing. "It is the beginning of the season and exciting to go out and race after working hard all winter," said Abbott, who noted her excitement that Neben would contend this year's event.
"It was fun to win the prologue last year but at the same time there was an empty feeling of who else could have been here," she added. "Amber is someone who is really fun to race against and someone I respect so much. I'm excited that she is here racing because I always want the best riders racing - because that's what we ultimately want to achieve."
The Redlands Bicycle Classic will continue with stage one, a 116 kilometre circuit race held in Beaumont tomorrow.
