No pain for Ouch’s Evans in Mexico

Cameron Evans (Ouch Presented by Maxxis) out-sprinted stage one winner Juan Pablo Magallanes (Mexican National Team) to claim victory on stage six. The Canadian rider together with Magallanes and Christopher Baldwin (Rock Racing) were able to drop three other riders from the small lead group after the first king of the mountains climb.
“We knew a break had a good shot to stay away to the finish,” Evans said. “We wanted to make sure we had a guy in every move.”
An early group of 15 riders was gaining some momentum, until the race leader’s jersey on Jackson Rodriguez (Serramenti Pvc Diquigiovanni - Androni Giocattoli) was found in the group. With less than a minute covering the top three on general classification, the peloton wasn’t about to let Rodriguez walk away with the race win.
After the threat of Rodriguez was naturalized the final group of six got away. Florencio Ramos (Tecos De La Uga) and Gerardo Soto (Region 1 Puebla) dropped out of the group following the first king of the mountains. The pair went on to finish at 1.30 minutes, just three seconds ahead of the surging peloton.
Hector Hugo Rangel (Canel'S Turbo) was unable to hold on after the leaders reached the second climb. He was left to ride alone for the final 25 kilometres and ended up finishing in fourth place, 1.20 minutes behind the leaders.
“Baldwin attacked a couple times,” Evans said of the final kilometres. “I covered the first one, and Magallenas covered the second. I knew he was pretty strong, but I was feeling pretty good and thought I had a good chance at the finish. I just need to be patient.”
