Sebastian Haedo's (Colavita-Sutter Home) virtual race lead became a reality when he convincingly sprinted to the Tour of San Luis stage two victory atop the ascent to the Mirrador del Potrero finish line. He won the tactical sprint ahead of his all-day breakaway companions Nazaret Prado (Team Brazil) and Alfredo Lucero (Team Argentina). The trio broke away forty kilometres into the 175-kilometre race and held off the chasing peloton by a two-minute margin.

"This was an incredible day for me, especially to get these jerseys," Haedo said. "We rode fast in the beginning and gained a lot of time on the field and then lost a lot of that in the last forty kilometres. But, it was really hot today. Lucero was attacking on the climb to the finish but in the last metres of the race I was able to sprint around and take this victory."

Haedo started the day in fourth place on the general classification, six seconds behind the stage one victor Mattis Gavazzi (Diquigiovani). He now leads the race by sixteen seconds ahead of second placed Lucero. Venezuelan Carlos Ochoa (Diquigiovanni) was the first rider from the peloton to reach the top of the five kilometre climb, behind the leaders. His efforts put him in third place, two and a half minutes back.

Like his elder brother Juan Jose Haedo (Saxo Bank), the younger Haedo is best known for his speedy sprint. He currently leads the best sprinter competition based on accumulated points. Furthermore, he gathered enough points at the intermediate climb and at the finish line to lead the climbers competition.

"I never expected to have all the jerseys," said Haedo who won both mid-race sprints and took third place in the mid-race climb. "But okay, because I was in the breakaway for so many kilometres, I got a lot of points. I was sprinting for the intermediate sprints. I did not contest the one intermediate climb, we were all working very well together."

The three gained more than fifteen minutes on the peloton by mid-race. The lengthy margin began to drop rapidly as they approached the base of the final climb with twenty kilometres to go. Diquigiovanni set a strong tempo at the front, less because they had the leader's jersey and more because they had two talented climbers in Ochoa and Columbian Jose Serpa, who placed fifth. They graciously received help from the Spanish professional team Andalucia-Cajasur.

"The problem today was that the other teams did not contribute to the race," said directeur sportif Gianni Savio. "So, we spoke realistically of our objectives. This is the first race of the year and we don't have cyclists in grand condition for what we needed of them today. We had good climbers to keep for the climb and we used them there. The only team that helped was Andalucia."

The trio's advantage may have been falling fast but it still left them enough time to play out a tactical finale. Lucero tested his legs several times to try to rid the other two but Prado responded to every move. Six seconds separated Lucero and Haedo in the general classification. As the virtual leader and the fastest sprinter of the three, Haedo kept a close eye on Lucero and put in a bid for his victory with 200 metres to go.

"I tried really hard to get away from Haedo and Prado but they were there every time I looked back," said Lucero, a native of San Luis. "It was a very tactical finish but we had so much time on the other riders that it was possible. It is really nice to be on the podium here. It was a really good stage and we all worked together very well today. I'm going to do my best tomorrow in the time trial – Do everything I can to try to win the race."

Stage three treats the international field to a twenty-kilometre time trial set to start at the San Luis velodromo. Haedo admitted that time trialing is not his best talent but that he would do what he could to maintain the race lead.

Argentina's scorching heat and humidity greeted the riders at the start of Tour of San Luis' stage two. Riders were spotted seeking precious shade next to the buildings and under the trees in the plaza centre. The race kicked off outside the Casa de Gobierno. Hundreds of fans came out to watch the riders set off on the 175 kilometre road race that catered to the climbers. It was the first of three stages designed to end with a mountain top finish.

The Chilean national team wasted no time getting down to business, launching the first of many attacks with in the first five kilometres. A successful eight-man break was established that included Andy Jacques-Maynes (Bissell), Juan Gaspari (Argentina), Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas), Gustabo Borcard (Argentina U23), Alessandro Proni (ISD), Jose Carrasco (Andalucia-Cajasur) and two Diquigiovanni riders Luca Celli and Jose Serpa.

Mattia Gavazzi (Diquigiovanni) took the celeste leader's jersey after winning the sprint in the previous days opening stage. He benefited from having two teammates represented in the early move. It took pressure off the team from having to control the peloton with a quick tempo.

They passed the first KOM tactically. Serpa won the four-kilometre long category three climb ahead of Proni and Gaspari. Not long after the opening climb, the peloton reeled in the break. Almost immediately upon their return, the most significant breakaway of the day set sail.

The newly formed group of three included Sebastian Haedo (Colavita-Sutter Home), Alfredo Lucero (Argentina-A) and Nazaret Prado (Scott-Brazil). "I was pretty far back in the overall so being in the break was a good situation for me," said Prado, who had not expected to gain the large amount of time that they did. "We worked really well together, everyone was taking even turns all the way to the bottom of the last climb."

The trio worked well together, rotating over the undulating terrain and gained a time gap of ten minutes on the peloton within the next forty kilometres. Haedo picked up the first intermediate sprint of the stage, located in small-town La Toma, 85 kilometres into the race.

The tranquilo peloton was content to let an additional two Chilean national team riders gain a two-minute advantage. The Chileans remained in no mans land, ten minutes behind the leaders and several minutes ahead of the bunch until they were reeled back in with toward the finish.

Haedo took full points in the second intermediate sprint located 113 kilometres into the stage in the small town of Saladillo. The sprinters were not contested by his two companions. He accumulated 6 points to take the lead of the sprinter's competition, one point ahead of Ben Jacques-Maynes (Bissell).

Their margin exploded to sixteen minutes following the final sprint of the day as they continued to act like teammates. They shared food and refreshments including extra bottles of water needed for a cool shower to help fight from overheating in the sun.

Diquigiovanni took their positions at the front of the field to set a quick tempo with help from Andalucia-Cajasur in the last half of the race. The team liked their odds of having three strong climbers to reduce the gap further before the leaders reached the top.

"The intent was that one of the three would attack to separate the teams on the climb," said Savio. "Jackson Rodriguez attacked at the base and Ochao counter attacked with two kilometres to the finish. The final rider, Serpa, was saved for the finish."

According to Savio his two climbers are good time trialists and he hopes they will get closer to the leader's jersey in the next two climbing stages. "They will not win the time trial or the jersey tomorrow," Savio said. "But they will be able to maintain their placing for now and when we go to the climb La Carolina in stage four, we hope to do well there."
