At the end of what is believed to have been the second-fastest stage ever held in the Tour of Qatar, Tom Boonen (Quick Step) today outsprinted six other riders to win the second leg of the race.

The Belgian beat 2007 stage winner Greg van Avarmaet (Silence-Lotto), Danilo Napolitano (Lampre) and Chris Sutton (Slipstream Chipotle) to the line at the Doha golf club, with three others also being classified in the same time. Two chasers were seven seconds down, and the rest of the field was at least 20 seconds back. In fact, all the riders from 32nd place onwards conceded more than three and a half minutes on what was a very decisive day in the saddle.

Two factors combined to wreak havoc on the peloton. The first was a strong sidewind which carved the field into echelons, and the second was the blazing speed. The 137.5 kilometre stage from Al Zubarah to Doha Golf Club was run off at a scorching 55.5 km/h, clearly quicker than the fastest-ever Tour de France road stage average of 50.355 [Mario Cipollini, Blois, 1999] and close to last year's Qatar stage record of 56.7 km/h. That mark was set on the third stage to Khalifa, and it too was won by Boonen in a sprint.

"The first hour we rode at 57 km/h," he said after the stage, clearly satisfied with the way he and his team rode. "Our team has a technique to ride in an echelon and our condition is good, so I decided to take the initiative right from the start of the race. For 75 kilometres we made war, but then there was a pause and the group behind us came back. A little after that a small group went away and we all gave 110 percent. We were screaming along, even I missed some turns [due to the speed]. Days like this don't come often."

Although Quick Step had the race leader's jersey with Matteo Tosatto, the decision was made to go flat out and chase the stage win rather than ride defensively. The Italian was up there for almost all of the day's racing but ultimately finished 20 seconds down in tenth place.

However that wasn't a problem for the team; Boonen had picked up a total of 13 bonus seconds by winning both the second intermediate sprint and the final gallop to the line. He consequently ended the day a comfortable nine seconds ahead of the next-closest rider, his team-mate Steven de Jongh, and a further five up on Van Avarmaet.

Next in line is Chris Sutton. The Australian rode well during the stage, placing fourth in the finale, is currently lying fourth in the general classification and drops one second behind Van Avarmaet in the best young rider competition.

"It was pretty hard out there," he told Cyclingnews after the finish. "I just checked my PowerTap and I averaged 55 km/h. It was a solid day. I had a maximum speed of 71.5 km/h...and there's no downhills here. It was flat and windy. It wasn't an easy day for anyone. The boys in my team rode really great. Dave Millar and Julian Dean helped and then I ended up in the front group with Magnus [Backstedt].

"I tried to have a go in the sprint there at the finish but Tom Boonen is pretty strong and I ended up running fourth. The whole team rode very well today, Maggie was driving it at the finish but I guess he ran out of a bit of gas at the very end...

"We will work on the sprint finish, we will get it down right and I reckon we will have a win before the end of the week."

Backstedt finished 20 seconds back in eleventh and echoed Sutton's talk about the high speeds. "It was out of the blocks and that was it," he said. "Basically when there is a cross wind you have to swop off all the time. If you don't take your turn you end up sitting on the back and it actually hurts more. You always get squashed on the edge of the road and you don't get a proper draft. It is actually worse doing that then going through quickly and taking your five-second turn. It was basically just through and off.

"Quick Step were by far the strongest today. They are the strongest guys out there, they basically controlled the whole day. They were there in numbers and when you have pretty much the whole team on the front, you can do what you want. It is always easier to control the race, you dictate the tactics. If you want to do something in the crosswind you have got the manpower behind you to do it. Of course, there are some bloody talented bike riders in that team as well."

How it unfolded

133 riders lined out in warm, sunny conditions at the day's start in Al Zubarah. Ahead of them lay 137.5 kilometres of flatland, with intermediate sprints at kilometre 21.5 and 91 offering bonuses of 3", 2" and 1". Others of 10", 6" and 4" were up for grabs at the finish.

With the first of these sprints perhaps acting as an incentive, the pace ramped up immediately after the start and the peloton fragmented into several groups. Quick Step's strength in fast, windy, flat conditions was reflected by the fact that six of them were present in the lead group of 24 riders, including Boonen, race leader Matteo Tosatto and last year's winner Wilfried Cretskens.

This group of two dozen knuckled down and continued to pull away. After 15 kilometres of racing they were 35" ahead of the next chasers, with a second group 1'30 back. Six clicks later they fought it out for the first intermediate sprint in Madinat Al Shamal and here De Jongh best Tom Veelers (Skil-Shimano) and race leader Tosatto. De Jongh consequently became race leader on the road.

The pressure continued to be applied and those up front covered 57 kilometres in the first hour. However the pursuers were doing everything they could to get back on terms; after some 50 kilometres of racing, the leaders had just 12" on the first chase group, and these two bunches merged soon afterwards. Those further back could not make real inroads into the lead, though, and remained over a minute back.

The second bonus sprint came at Umm Suwaiya and there Boonen showed his intent by beating Veelers and De Jongh. Soon afterwards his team ramped up the pace once again and shed all bar 12; those left up front included five Quick Step riders, namely Boonen, De Jongh, Cretskens, Kevin Hulsmans and Maaerten Wynants, plus Napolitano (Lampre), Sutton and Magnus Backstedt (Slipstream Chipotle), Van Avermaet, Jurgen Roelandts and Maarten Tjallingii (Silence-Lotto), and Alexandre Pichot (Bouygues Telecom).

With 30 kilometres remaining a group of approximately 30 riders was 12" back. This gap gradually grew bigger, effectively guaranteeing that the stage win would be fought out amongst those in the first group.

With his fast finish and the confidence derived from winning multiple stages in the past, few expected Boonen to lose, and so it turned out. He handily beat Van Avermaet, Napolitano, Sutton, Roelandts, Pichot and De Jongh to the line, with Tjallingii and last year's winner Cretskens slipping 7" back. Deposed race leader Tosatto and Backstedt came in a further 13" down.

It's too soon to say their challenge is over, but the same can't be said for the rest of the field. The remainder of the peloton are already between 40" and 14'26" back, and it will take a very big ride for any of these to get back into the frame. Quick Step clearly has the form to wreak havoc on the peloton; are its riders on the way to a third consecutive overall victory?

What's next

Tuesday's third stage of the race takes the riders 147.5 kilometres from the Camel Race Track to the Qatar Foundation. Intermediate sprints are at Al Ghuwayriya (52.5km) and Umm Suwaiya (91.5km), and more bonus seconds are up for grabs at the finish line.
