Tosatto gets his thanks as Quick Step repeat

Slipstream and Skil-Shimano go tantalisingly close

Repeating the success of the 2007 edition, the Quick Step squad showed it means business when the riders scorched to team time trial victory on the seafront cornice in Doha. As expected, the Belgian Classic specialists were the men to beat, going of last of the seventeen teams in the race and overhauling an impressive Team Slipstream Chipotle by two seconds.

Their victory owed a little to good fortune or, rather, the absence of bad luck, as Kevin Hulsmans' rear tubular exploded as they were celebrating just after the finish. Had it happened during the test, the team would have lost a valuable piston in the engine and perhaps also the victory.

Matteo Tosatto was first over the line and he consequently took the maillot of race leader. It was the team's way of thanking him for his work over the past two seasons, and quite probably his most rewarding day on the bike since his Tour de France stage win in Mâcon eighteen months ago.

"We had no set strategy today, except to start flat out and continue all the way to the finish," said the blocky 33-year-old from Castelfranco in Italy. "It was a big, big effort all the way, but also a very good experience for all the team. Slipstream was very good, all the teams were very good, so we had to work hard."

Tosatto's last big win was in the same test last year. On that occasion Steven De Jongh was first home of the team and took the leader's jersey. This time round, another of Tom Boonen's lead-out men had his time in the spotlight, thanks to the gesture by the team to reward a helper.

"The decision was made by the directeur sportif," he said, smiling. "For me I have been working for two years for the team and so to get a stage win and the yellow jersey is perfect."

Tom Boonen was pleased that his team-mate had a moment of glory. "Matteao Tosatto was with me for the last two years and I know him very well. This morning we spoke about tactics and decided that in the case of us having the best time, he can be the one to cross the line first.

"My legs were feeling very good out there. That has to be the case because you don't win something like this very easily. The other teams were very good, so we had to be very good to win. It went fluidly; we train a lot for these kinds of efforts."

The now twelve-time stage victor was happy to dedicate the victory to two people. His friend and team-mate Kevin Hulsmans became a father last week, while his own father André Boonen is in hospital being treated for an ulcer.

Team Slipstream Chipotle's David Millar was riding the test in the while, blue and red of British national champion and had his race face on at the start. Time trials are his speciality; prior to Quick Step's beating of their time, he stated was pleased with their effort.

"I am very happy with how we did," he said, commenting on his first day of competition with his new team. "The guys rode fantastically, we had a very controlled discipline. We said to everyone that we won't start our race until we turn around, then we really start. It is too easy with these things to go flat out from the beginning. I am very pleased, we will see how it holds out."

Team-mate Julian Dean gave his reaction after Quick Step came home and bumped them off the top of the leaderboard. He was frustrated to go so close to a win, but recognised the value of their ride. "I prefer to win," he said, when asked for a response. "But I am fairly happy. I did everything I could…I couldn't have done anything more myself on the day."

Prior to the race Millar and others on the team said that a place in the top three was possible. Dean echoed this, but said that expectations were actually higher than that. "We really believed [beforehand] that we could win today. We came in fully prepared to try to win, knowing that a top three was achievable."

The ride is far above the level of what Slipstream Chipotle have managed in the past, and shows that recent hard work plus the additions to the team were worth the investment. Finishing just three seconds behind Quick.step is a very good achievement, and proves that it is fully capable of competing with the big ProTour squads.

"It is a great start because we showed that we are up there with the top teams," continued Dean. "At this time of the year, Quick Step is always the best team in the world. Everybody there is focussed on the Classics. But today we showed that we can be right up there."

So too, interestingly, did the day's big surprise. Skil-Shimano were 11th out of 17 teams last time round, but today they were only five seconds off the pace of Quick.Step. That's a fine achievement, especially as ProTour squads Liquigas, Silence-Lotto and Credit Agricole finished next in line. The team took some big scalps today and, like Slipstream Chipotle, will be very motivated this evening.

How it unfolded

The wealth of the area

The Iran Cycling Federation-selection were first to start on what was a mild, slightly hazy day in Qatar's capital. The eight riders began the pancake-flat six kilometre test at 14.50, tore up and down the Doha Corniche and finished in a time of 7'05". This was immediate bested by Australian team Drapac Porsche, who went 18" quicker.

Saunier Duval-Scott and the BMC Racing Team came and went without improving the mark, then Crédit Agricole went 3" faster. Tinkoff Credit Systems went close to this time but were a couple of seconds adrift.

Bouygues Telecom, Topsport Vlaanderen, Milram and the Doha Team all followed, but it was Skil-Shimano who finally knocked the French squad from its perch when it took two seconds out of its riders. This was, to say the least, unexpected, and while Silence Lotto and Liquigas tried to put a ProTour team back on top, both came up marginally short.

Slipstream-Chipotle were fourth-last to start and was also something of an underdog. However Millar, Dean, Magnus Backstedt & co. were fired up to aim for the win, and looked to be well within a shout of that when they finished in 6'37". That time resisted the efforts of Cofidis and Lampre, but finally fell when Tosatto, Wilfried Cretskens, Steven de Jongh, Boonen, Jurgen Van de Walle and Hulsmans scorched across the line.

Whooping with delight, the six Quick Step riders celebrated for a number of minutes, clapping each other on the back and also doing likewise with the two riders who had lost contact, Maarten Wynants and Wouter Weylandt. In the midst of all this a loud crack was heard; that was Hulsman's tyre, which gave up the ghost later rather than sooner, and added to the feeling that this was indeed their day.

And so, as it has done the past two years, the Belgian squad will hold the leader's jersey heading into the second day of the race. Their goal will be to defend, relying on Boonen's fast-twitch fibres to nab time bonuses in the intermediate sprints and at the stage finish and thus fend off any ambitious rivals.

Tosatto knows that his time in the yellow jersey may be limited, especially with a fast-finisher such as Dean aiming to put the Slipstream Chipotle name at the top of the results sheet [and to celebrate his birthday in style]. However even if the Italian loses the lead on tomorrow's flat second stage, he will be content if one of the Quick Step riders takes over from him.

"I will take this day by day," he said. "I am here in Qatar to work and to prepare for the important races in March and April, but I hope that one of us can take the general classification."

Next up

Stage two is 137.5 kilometres in length and runs from Al Zubarah to the Doha Golf Club. The early part heads north and east, skirting the coast, before plunging south in the direction of the capital. Intermediate sprints come at kilometre 21.5 and 91, offering bonuses of 3", 2" and 1", while 10", 6" and 4" is on offer at the finish.
