Whoever expected a third bunch sprint in a row at Jelajah Malaysia got a bit of a surprise to see a breakaway working successfully during stage 4 on the way to Muar. The move was initiated with 158 kilometers to go and included riders like climbers Ghader Mizbani from Tabriz Petrchemical and LeTua's Tonton Susanto who were equal on time just 1'17" behind race leader Li Fuyu (Trek-Marco Polo). The two were also equal on points and and placings from the three first stages.

Of these two, the one crossing the line first would become the new race leader. It was the Indonesian veteran who arrived in third place and scored a four-second bonus while Differdange-Apiflo's Frederik Johansson from Sweden escaped from the front group to grab the stage win.

"Our team's strategy consisted of following the breakaways to protect our sprinter Anuar Manan," Susanto explained. "When this group went, I was in it and it proved to be a good thing to be there. The guys with me went faster and faster. Everybody was working very well. Now I want to defend the jersey 'til the end on Sunday and I'm confident in my team for doing so."

The Malaysian continental squad, backed by cycling enthusiasts, impressed a few people with the way they prepared the winning sprints for Manan but nobody expected them to have such a high place in the GC. They can rely on the 34 year-old who has won the Asian title in Le Tour de Langkawi twice and overall classifications like the Tour of East Java and the Tour of Taiwan.

Kuala Lumpur's Suhardi Hassan also showed the improvement of Malaysian cyclists. He moved into fourth place overall after getting a reproach from his mother Halijah Man. He called her in the morning because it was Awal Muharram - the first day on the Islamic calendar that gave a holly day in some states of Malaysia. She asked him: "How come haven't you been on the podium yet?" He promised to do it today and indeed honoured his promise by taking the white jersey of the best Malaysian rider.

How it unfolded

After 20 kilometers and a few earlier skirmishes, 11 men went away: Tomoya Kano (Skil-Shimano), Saeditanha Abbas (Azad University), Kai Tsun Lam (Hong-Kong), Frederik Johansson (Differdange-Apiflo), Tonton Susanto (LeTua), Naoki Mukaigawa (Matrix-Powertag), Ghader Mizbani (Tabriz), Kazushige Kuboki, Masakazu Ito and Kohei Uchima (Japan national team), and Suhardi Hassan (Kuala Lumpur).

Only Mukaigawa didn't manage to stay in that group. It took a while for the ten others to create a significant gap. It initially stayed at around one minute with Giant chasing. The Taiwanese team knew how dangerous their former rider Mizbani was for Paul Griffin who was third in the GC. The Trek-Marco Polo team of race leader Li Fuyu wasn't able to do all the work at the front of the bunch like in the two previous days when the team shared the task with LeTua. The latter was represented off the front by Susanto. Trek-Marco Polo also lost some strength and motivation as their sprinter Sergey Kudentsov had no choice but retire after crashing on the road.

The time gap between the ten man break and the bunch reached 3'30" at 100 kilometers. It grew up to 7'50" with 50km to go and the Malaysian continental team eventually took care of the chase since their leadership in the national classification was heavily threatened by Kuala Lumpur's Suhardi Hassan. Along the way, Hassan won three hot spot sprints of the day and despite a flat tyre with 8km to go.

Ito was the first breakaway rider to try and go solo with 16km to go. He didn't make it. Johansson went away with less than 3km to go and proved to have had the winning move..

By finishing third and taking the bonus, Susanto moved into first place on GC.
