The Tour of Virginia comes with a new name and a record-setting field size for 2007. Formerly known as the Tour of Shenandoah, this year's fifth edition has expanded beyond the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia to other locales, including Lynchburg, Charlottesville, and Covington. However, Valley towns like Harrisonburg, Waynesboro, Staunton, and Natural Bridge continue to host some of the racing action. For 2007, 29 teams and 180 racers will contest Virginia's largest race, which has earned a new spot on the National Racing Calendar (NRC).

"Not only is this the largest, but also it's the strongest field in the race's history," said promoter Matt Butterman going into the race. "This year we are on the USA Cycling National Racing Calendar (NRC), and there's a depth in the talent list that we haven't seen before."

The Natural Bridge individual time trial kicks of racing on Tuesday, April 24, but racers get two stages for the first day. The second stage is a criterium in Lynchburg, Virginia, on the east side of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The remaining days, racers will tackle one stage per day, and a new stage, a 160.9km road race, wraps up action in Charlottesville and surrounding Albemarle County on Sunday, April 29.

Saturday, amateur racers will get to test their legs, too; a slate of crits for various categories precedes the pro race in downtown Harrisonburg.

Returning this year is the 2003-4 champion and favorite, Scottie Weiss, riding for AEG-Toshiba-Jet Network. He's looking for a third win. Last year's General Classification winner, Brent Bookwalter, now riding for the National Development Squad, will not be on the start line after suffering a severely broken left leg in a crash in mid April while racing in Europe.

Traditionally, the race has featured a mix of seasoned pros and up and coming development riders. So amongst the established names, look for breakout performances from younger racers testing their legs in a six-day stage race.

Although a hilly race, the Tour of Virginia traditionally promises much for the sprinters. Sprinting sensation JJ Haedo will be off racing in Europe with the CSC team, but his brother Lucas is now racing in the US and will be coming to the Tour of Virginia with the brand new Rock Racing squad, managed by former road pro racer Frankie Andreu. So far Lucas Heado has a slew of top five results in the USA to his credit.

Unique to this race will be a team composed entirely of diabetic racers. Phil Southerland will be heading Team Type 1 Monitored by Freestyle. Members of the team are all seasoned pros, and their presence jives well with the race's mission of the race is to raise awareness and funds for diabetes research.

Look for action from the following UCI Continental teams: Kodak Galleries/Sierra Nevada, Rite Aid, AEG-Toshiba, Priority Health/Bissell, Rock Racing, Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast, and Calyon/Litespeed (a development squad for the French Credit Agricole team), VMG (American U-23 development squad).
