Stage 3 - October 21: Cheatley takes the women's title

Day three of the 2006 Lion Foundation National Road Championships in Palmerston saw Catherine Cheatley crowned the Women’s National Champion for Road Race in tough conditions with high winds in a race which held until the final 10 kilometres.

The race unfolded over 109.8km of undulating hills, hairpin turns and detoriating weather conditions with a lead bunch breaking away on the second lap, dropping nine of the 23 riders. Time trial champion and pre race favourite Alison Shanks (Cycling Otago) worked hard at the front of the bunch for much of the first half of the race and lead a second break away from the peleton leading into the third lap.

With three laps to go the entire field had regrouped excluding local Katri Laike who was forced to withdraw from the race due to injury. With 2 laps remaining, Shanks and fellow Commonwealth Games rider Cheatley (nee Sell) of Wanganui maintained a 5 second lead against the peleton.

Rain at the start of the final lap saw the bunch again regroup to work together only to be split up again with Cheatley, Shanks and Auckland’s Yvette Hills-Willis taking a commanding lead into the final straight. Cheatley crossed the line with 59 seconds on second place getter Hills-Willis who was racing in her first National Championships having only taken up the sport competively this year.

For Mary Jones (Pegasus Cycling), this mornings race was one she was determined to complete having dramatically crashed in last years championships in a sprint finish. Jones was rightfully emotional when she stepped onto the dias to accepted her bronze medal in the Vet 2 Women’s race, behind Aucklands Linda Goldsack (first) and Otago’s Jan Brosnahan (second).

Robert Martin of Christchurch’s Pegasus Cycling club completed the double when he won the Handbike Road race ahead of Jonathon Nelson (Cycling Timaru) and Tom Scott (Morrinsville Wheelers). The riders completed a circuit of 36.6km on purpose built racing bikes requiring immense upper body strength to power around the course.

Wakatipu’s John Alabaster successfully defended his Veteran 4 National Championship title winning by over a minute with local rivals Wayne Hildred and Mike Lormans (both of Cycling Otago) coming in second and third. Alabaster is a renowned tough, gritty competitor who broke his leg in three places in April this year and was riding with pins, rods and a plate in his leg.

Unlike many competitors in these championships, Annaliisa Farrel (of Pegasus Cycling) is having two chances at both the time trial and road courses. Farrel is riding both in her age group, Vet 1 Women, and as the stoker in a tandem with Neelu Memon and heads into tomorrows tandem having medaled in all races, gold in this mornings road race, silver in the tandem time trial along with Memon and gold in her individual time trial.

The final day of racing tomorrow in Palmerston will see the Senior Men and Under 23 Men race a demanding 183km with Dunedin local Greg Henderson and Timaru’s Hayden Roulston expected to provide highly tactical and powerhouse riding. Henderson returned from Switzerland on Friday night where he signed his pro contract with T-Mobile.
