Stage 2 - October 20: Vet and Junior Road Races

The second day of the 2006 Lion Foundation National Road Championships saw the first of the Road Races take place today in Palmerston South. As expected, the junior races provided some fantastic racing with sprint finishes in all races, and the vets didn’t disappoint either.

The much anticipated Under 19 Women’s race saw Te Awamutu’s Rushlee Buchanan (Junior Worlds rider) narrowly take the win from yesterdays Time Trial champion Rachel Mercer from Levin. The Under 19 Men’s race was built to be one of the must see races of the weekend with almost of all of 2006 World Junior Track and Road Squads racing. Chris Macic from Auckland took the gold from Central Otago’s James Williamson (second) and Sam Eadie (third).

National Track Coach Terry Gyde said it was exciting to see such depth and hard fought racing in the junior ranks. "It’s great to know that there are a number of quality riders putting their hands up to be noticed. "

There was barely a whisker between Veteran 6 National Champion Peter Cox (Cycling New Plymouth) and veteran legend Alan Hood of Papanui with Laurence Sunde finishing 3rd in the sprint finish.

Saturdays elite women’s road race will see newly crowned national time trial champion Alison Shanks go up against Wanganui’s Catherine Cheatley (nee Sell) and local rider Katri Laike.
