Big guns back in Castilla y Leon

After a later start in 2005 which prevented any ProTour teams from entering the race, the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon is back in 2006 with a start list that includes the likes of Liberty Seguros' Kazakh gun Alexandre Vinokourov and Discovery Channel's Yaroslav Popovych. Vino will be backed up by Luis Leon Sanchez and Marcos Serrano, both of who are capable of taking an overall win. After a solid start to his pro road racing career with Discovery Channel, Trent Lowe will be supporting Popovych when the road heads up, along with José Azevedo and local boy José Luis Rubiera. On paper Discovery's team for this race is very strong and they're taking the short stage race very seriously.

Local squad Communidad Valenciana will once again be a force on home turf with Ruben Plaza leading the charge, and Euskatel-Euskadi's Iban Mayo will also be starting in Valladolid on March 20. Look to the locals to make a strong run for the overall, and the Belgian teams of Chocolade Jacques-Topsport and Unibet.com to make their presence felt in any sprint finishes - both have been in form in this area so far in 2006.
