Lewis takes another championship

Craig Lewis (Greenville, S.C. / TIAA-CREF) picked up his second stars-and-stripes jersey this week when he finished first in the men’s U23 criterium Thursday at the USA Cycling National Festival at Seven Springs.
Lewis, who won the U23 men’s road race title Monday, bested the 61-rider
field in a sprint in the closing 200 meters of the 60-kilometer contest.
“With a lap to go, I saw my chance in the last corner and took it inside
and got the gap and nobody could close it,” Lewis said.
With riders averaging 1 minute 25 seconds per kilometer lap at Jennerstown Speedway, Lewis was quickly part of a six-man chase group that bridged to three lead riders just 12 km into the race. As each lap passed, the break’s gap grew from five seconds to as much as 1:27 with 19 laps remaining. Luckily for Lewis, he had two TIAA-CREF members with him in the break: Troy Wells (Durango, Colo.) and Blake Caldwell (Boulder, Colo.)
“I knew we were pretty much gone when we bridged because everyone was represented – two VMG guys, us, and so we rolled it the whole way,” Lewis said. “We almost lapped the field, but no one wanted to do that, so we just let them sit out there 20 seconds in front of us and I talked to my teammates to watch everything with ten laps to go, but everyone was rolling through.”
The nine leaders continued to work together pulling through until the final ten kilometers when Wells and Caldwell attacked the group, but were quickly reabsorbed by the peloton.
“With 10 k to go, it became a total cat-and-mouse game,” said Wells, who finished fourth. “It was just attack after attack with everybody. (My team) tried to counter everything; not really to chase each other down but counter with Craig, me and Blake.”
With six laps remaining, officials rang the bell for a “field finish” option – since the lead group was ready to lap the peloton, a bell was rang to remove the peloton after a final lap.
With one lap left to go for the remaining nine, Lewis began to build a gap on the leaders as he crossed the start/finish line.
“Craig made the perfect move,” Wells said. “He went with one lap to go and Blake tried to shut it down at the front, and it was just the hesitation from the group that Craig needed to get off.”
