Stage 5 - July 15: Desert Orthopedics/Rebound Physical Therapy-Downtown Criterium

Men: Haedo wins the criterium; Louder increases lead

By Kirsten Robbins in Bend, Oregon

Early this morning, Health Net’s Nathan O’Neil won the Bend Research Inc.- Arnold Market time trial in a time of 13 minutes and 25 seconds. He rode nine seconds faster than second placed rider Burnard Vanulden and thirteen seconds ahead of Sergey Lagutin, both from Navigators. Health Net’s Jeff Louder increased his general classification lead to ten seconds on Toyota-United’s Chris Wherry.

In tonight’s criterium, Health Net organized a steady tempo despite the attacking going on around them. Their tempo proved to be successful in protecting their yellow jersey as they brought back a thirteen-rider break in the final lap of the race.

Toyota-United was in a good position with two riders in the break and Juan Jose Haedo sitting nicely behind the Health Net train waiting until the break came back. The break was brought back within one lap to go and Haedo came through the finish line winning the field sprint over Jittery-Joes Jeff Hopkins and Health Net’s Gord Fraser.

“Our number one goal is to keep the jersey safe,” said Health Net’s leader Jeff Louder. Then, if Gord felt good he would sprint when the break was brought back but that was just an added bonus. Our only goal is to come out of the race tomorrow with the jersey.”

“I am confident and optimistic that the team can defend the jersey tomorrow and if it is not with me than I am happy to keep it within the team.”

The break was initiated by arguably the most aggressive rider in this evening’s criterium – Toyota-United’s Ivan Stevic. The thirteen riders were represented by Priority Health, Successfulliving, Toyota-United, Saunier-Duval, South Australia, Jittery Joes, Broadmark and Navigators.

“In the break we had riders Ivan Stevic and Tony Cruz,” said directeur sportif Harm Jansen, “Those guys are fast guys but I wasn’t too comfortable with that break. Our riders were strong but it can always get messy at the end of a break like that. In the last six to seven laps I had a strong feeling that it would come back together. We wanted to play the card with J.J.”

“J.J. did a phenomenal job tonight. He has not raced for a couple of weeks and we had him working hard the last couple of days. Him winning today is an indication of the quality of rider he really is – that he is a really really good rider. Our objective was to just make sure to protect the guys in G.C and we have the fastest guys here so we just had to win the stage.”

Health Net’s organization at the front of the field kept the break with in thirty seconds for the entirety of the criterium.

“I have a ten second lead now coming out of the time trial this morning,” said Louder. “The boys kept everything under control in the criterium tonight to protect my lead. Basically we tried to keep the race safe, steady and watched for any dangerous moves. It came together at the end and Haedo took the win. But the team rode really strongly and it was great to see. It is complimentary that they have confidence in me. It wasn’t too much of an effort tonight -- the big day will be tomorrow.”

Tomorrow marks the final stage of the 2006 Cascade Classic. “Tomorrow's race is typically a race that sees an early break go up the road and a team that controls the gap to come back together at the end,” said Louder. “It is a good course to hold tempo on for a team. But, it could be complicated tomorrow because there are four separate sprints with bonuses so it is going to take a while to figure out the situation in the end because so much time is up for grabs. There will be a lot of tactical riding. Everyone on our team is riding really strong -- stronger by the day.”

Women: VanGilder wins from a break; LaSasso stays in yellow

Earlier this morning Team Lipton’s Kristin Armstrong won stage three in a lightening fast time of 14 minutes and 40 seconds. Her teammate and G.C. leader Kristen LaSasso was able to hold onto the yellow jersey by 24 seconds. Armstrong came in 39 seconds ahead of second place Touchstone Climbing’s rider Beverley Harper and 59 seconds ahead of Victory Brewing’s Rachel Heal.

With LaSasso sitting in the leaders jersey it was in Team Lipton’s best interest to protect her by keeping a close watch on threatening riders initiating breaks. An early break slipped off the front with Team Lipton’s Laura VanGilder taking the win over Velo-Bella’s Kelly Murden and Victory Brewing’s Chrissy Ruiter.

Velo-Bella’s aggressive rider Kelly Murden initiated a break with in the first half of the fifty-minute criterium. She was followed by Webcor rider Katheryn Curi and later joined by Team Lipton’s Laura VanGilder, Victory Brewing’s Chrissy Ruiter, Colorado Premier Training’s Marisa Asplund and Argon 18’s Jessica Phillips. The six riders increased their gap to twenty seconds while Team Lipton’s Kristin Armstrong set tempo at the front to not further the gap.

“Kelly Murden initiated the break and Katheryn Curi bridged across to it,” said VanGilder. “Chrissy, Marisa, Jessica bridged up to us and so did McGuire. We got off the front with 27 minutes into the race.”

The riders in the break did not have a threat on the general classification but was well represented by all teams -- the field was content to let it go.

“Our goal was to protect LaSasso’s lead we were keeping our eye on people who could threaten that in a break,” said VanGilder. “If we had to concede the stage win to protect the jersey we would. We wanted to take some pressure off of LaSasso with a non threatening break go up the road and that is what happened.”

With one lap remaining it was clear the break was not going to come back. “I didn’t work or go for any primes during the crit,” said VanGilder. Then a prime was given with three to go and I went for that. I continued because I had a gap and I felt confident I could stay away from that group for two more laps. I was more fresh than they were and I felt like if I did get brought back I could possibly still win the sprint.”
