The second day of Britain's longest bicycle race saw the remaining 87 riders complete the 99 mile long stage in just under 3 hours 40 minutes, at an average speed of 27.5mph. This second stage was set in the lanes around Newdigate, to the south of Dorking in east Surrey.

Yet again, Duncan Urqhart (Prestige VC) was in an early break, this time with Paul Helion and Jody Crawforth of Evans Cycles, but again the break was brought back to the main group. Due to roadworks the course had to be altered so, instead of the usual 'flat' narrow circuit around Capel and Rusper, the race took in additional laps of the Norwood Hill circuit which included the long drag up the Hill itself. It was here that, on lap 3, a new break made its successful getaway from the bunch when 19 riders managed to break free. Missing from the break were the overnight race leader, Brian Keneally (Team Munster) and Urqhart who had the misfortune to puncture just as the break started.

This lead group rapidly extended the gap from the main bunch to some two minutes and, once the race moved onto the North Holmwood circuit, the tempo increased still further until by the finish the gap was more than four minutes. Central Division's James Flanagan was first across the line, closely followed by Andrew Roche (Team Isle of Man) and Neil Coleman (Alcan-Bianchi), who now takes over the race leader's yellow jersey.

Tomorrow sees the race move to Goodwood where the day starts with a short time trial around the motor racing circuit before the afternoon's 'main event' when the road race tackles the South Downs with eight ascents of the 140 metre-high climb.
